George Lafayette Richardson was born near Irisburg, Henry County, Virginia, November 9, 1843, being the third of five sons of George W. and Clara Martin Richardson. His four brothers and one of his five sisters have preceded him to the grave. Mr. Richardson resided at home with his father until the war between the states broe out, when he voluntarily emlisted in Captain Mullins' Company, (Company a.) 42nd Virginia Regimant. Mr. Richardson was n excellent soldier, always ready for duty when called upon and he served with high distinction throughtout the war. Having been n contest for four years, he received only onewound, which was in the right arm. At the close of the war, Mr. Richardson returned to is native home ad after fitting himself with a splended preparatory education, he took up the study of law privately and owing to his superb intellect and diligence he soon acquired sufficient knowledge of the law and passed the state bar examination with high honors. He was admitted to the bar and began the practice of his profession at his county town, Martinsville, Virginia. He was an able expounder of the law, and a fluent speaker; therefore, he soon became one o the leading members of the Martinsville bar. Mr. Richardson was married to Miss Molly Dyer, the daughter o Captan B. f. Dyer, of Axton, Va., November 1873, of which marriage there were no children. To prove Mr. Richarson's worth and ability as a lawyer he was overwhelminly elected to the office of Commonwealth's Attorney for Henry County in the year 1883. He filled the office with high integrity and to the satisfaction of the people. He was again a candidate for the nomination for Commonwealth's ttorney on the Democrtic tickiet in the year 1907 but was defeated. He was again a candidate for the Democratic nomination for the legislature in 1909, but was efeted. But in the year 1911 he was nominated by acclamation by the Democratic party for the legislature and was overwhelmingly elected the following fall. It was during this term of office that his health give way; therefore, he had been in declining health since January 1912, and had been confined to his bed at times since that time, and it was realized by his friends and relatives that he would not be with us very long. The morning before his death came in the afternoon he talked more freely and more plainly than he had for the pst few months when he was suddenly stricken with paralysis of the brin and death came a few hours later. Thus passed away a congenial husband, a loving friend, and a kindly neighbor, a distinguished soldier, an able lawyer, a brilliant orator, and a devoted patriot and statesman. Mr. Richardson united himself with the Centenary Methodist Churh in the year 1902 and he was recognized by all who knew him as a leading church member and church worker. Mr. Richardson is survived by his wife and four sisters, Mr. W. G. Shackelford, of Boxwood, Va., Mrs. J. M. Land of Boxwood, Va., and Mrs. W. S. Fretwell of Reidsville, N.C.
