P. Pratt, 2017 Franklin Pierce Pratt (Phillip Isaac7, Thomas Henry6, William5, William4, John3, William2, Griffin1), third child of Phillip Isaac Pratt and Nancy Webb Harris, was born September 21, 1852, in Leaksville, Rockingham County, North Carolina. It is alleged that he was named for the then newly elected President, Franklin Pierce. Franklin was a farmer. He married Sarah Matilda Richardson, youngest daughter of George Washington Richardson and Clarissa Harvey Martin, December 22, 1873, in Henry County, Virginia. She was born December 24, 1857, in Henry County, Virginia. The Richardson and Martin families have been heavily researched and have a rich history with deep ties in Henry County, Virginia. Sarah's great grandfather, Brigadier General Joseph Lynch Martin was instrumental in the important American victory at the battle of King's Mountain, Georgia, that was considered a turning point during the Revolutionary War. Franklin died of pneumonia December 24, 1888, age 36. He is buried in the Pratt Cemetery, Eden, Rockingham County, North Carolina (Find A Grave Memorial # 34823893). His tombstone inscription "All though he sleeps his memory doth live." Franklin Pierce and Sarah Richardson Pratt had four known children. Sarah married, second, Joseph Henry Land, twice a widower and son of William Land and Lydia Wilson, September 15, 1895, in Henry County, Virginia. He was born August 30, 1842, in Henry County, Virginia. Joseph was married, first, to Eliza A. Hopper, daughter of John Hopper, October 25, 1886, in Henry County, Virginia. Joseph and Eliza Hopper Land had six known children: C. A. Land m. (unknown) Meador, John W., Robert Jackson, Joseph Henry m. Hattie B. Bell, Virginia B. m. John A Hooper, and Mattie Land m. Charlie Abner Meador. Joseph married, second, to Sarah B. Shackelford, daughter of George William Shackelford and Sophia Lamkin, January 28, 1992. Joseph and Sarah Shackelford Land had one son who died at childbirth. Joseph was a farmer and highly respected former Confederate soldier. The Pratt children, raised in the Land household, were not adopted and maintained their Pratt surname. Sarah was a faithful member of the Methodist Church in Leaksville. Sarah died March 19, 1925, at the home of her son, Franklin, in Salisbury, North Carolina, and her funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Leaksville. She was initially buried in the Pratt family plot at the Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Salisbury. The Land family arranged to have her remains returned to Henry County and she was finally buried next to her second husband, Joseph Henry Land, in the Greenview Cemetery, Reidsville, Rockingham County, North Carolina (Find A Grave Memorial # 48422488). This caused some minor friction between the surviving Pratt and Land families. Joseph died later that same year August 23, 1925, in Alamance County, and is buried in the Greenview Cemetery, Reidsville, North Carolina (Find A Grave Memorial # 48422476).
