He married Martha Jane Ragsdale, daughter of John B. Ragsdale and Mary Watts, September 1860, in Wilkes County, North Carolina. She was born about 1835 in Davie County, North Carolina. John was a farmer. John was living in his father's household in Rockingham County, in the 1850 US Census, and in his brother's, William J. Pratt, household in Wilkes County, in the 1860 US Census. He and Mary were living with their children in Iredell County in the 1880 US Census. There is no record of their death or burial. John and Martha Ragsdale Pratt had ten known children:
