It remains unknown but possible that Manley was the surname of William's natural father as no other explanation for use of this name exists. In the 1860 Johnson County, Tennessee census, Altea Louisa Forrester and William Daniel Manley Forrester (age 1) are listed as boarding at the home of Peter and Sarah (Bailey) Dougherty. The 1870 Johnson County, Tennessee census has William Daniel Manley (Dougherty/Forrester?) (age 11) living in the home of Peter and Sarah Bailey Dougherty. The 1880 Johnson County, Tennessee has William Daniel Manley Dougherty (age 21), adopted, and living at the home of Peter and Sarah Bailey Dougherty. Peter and Sara (Bailey) Dougherty raised William as their own child. He assumed the Dougherty surname as did his descendants. He inherited Peter and Sarah's estate. Deed from W.D. Dougherty to W.L.
