Thomas Henry Pratt (William5, William4, John3, William2, Griffin1), son of William Pratt and Elizabeth Vernon, was born 1801 in Leaksville, Rockingham County, North Carolina. Perhaps he was a twin brother to Garland Pratt, also born in 1801. He married, about 1820, Frances Irion, daughter of Frederick Witt Irion and Rebecca Elizabeth (unknown), in Rockingham County, North Carolina. The Irion surname is often misspelled and found confused with the Vernon surname. The Irion family has been well researched by Gerald A. Irion. Frances Irion's sister, Jemimah Irion, married William Alfred Pratt, Thomas Henry's brother. In 1833, Thomas purchased 165 acres of land along both sides of Buffalo Creek in Rockingham County. Later, he owned a general store in Leaksville. During the Civil War, Thomas read the daily news to local citizens from his store. Several of Thomas and Frances Pratt's sons served during the Civil War. According to the US 1850 US Census (Slave Schedule), Rockingham County, North Carolina records, a Thomas Pratt, owned the following slaves: one black female, age 38; one black female, age 8; one black female, age 5; and one black male, age 2. It is likely but not certain that the Thomas Pratt in the 1850 Slave Census records and Thomas Henry Pratt are one in the same. There are no other records or family history concerning the treatment or disposition of these slaves, as whether they were sold or freed prior to slavery officially ending in the US between 1863-1865. Thomas and Frances died in 1872 in Rockingham County, North Carolina. Thomas Henry and Frances Irion Pratt had nine known children:
