  He is the son of John Jefferson Whittington Jr and Susannah Dugger Whittington. He married Pheobe Carriger.

 Melvin Porter Whittington and Phoebe Carriger Whittinton lived for many years in Watauga County, North Carolina. The left North Carolina on April 6, 1872 on their way to Oregon. There were 75 people on their wagon train. They stopped for a short time in Jackson County, Washington before arriving in Oregon on June 2, 1872. They settled in Coos County Oregon on the South Fork of the Coquille River where Melvin purchased part of John Hill's farm. He later purchased the entire farm. Among those making the journey to Oregon were Hayes, Wagners, Masts and Whittingtons from Watauga County, Tennessee.
