(1) We know that Altea Louisa Forrester was born in March of 1838 and was counted (children names not listed) in the Johnson County 1840 census in the household of Atha (McCoy) Forrester. John and Atha (McCoy) Forrester had a son, John Forrester, born also in 1838. It is possible, but not likely that Atha could have had both Altea Louisa and John (the junior) in 1838. John Forrester (the senior) died in 1840 sometime before the census was taken about June 1, 1840. In John Forrester's will, he left his estate to his wife and 8 children listed in the will. Altea Louisa Forrester is not included in the will as one of his children. It is unlikely that John Forrester would have overlooked Altea Louisa Forrester (b. March 1838) as his daughter and included his son John Forrester (b. 1838). What is more likely is that Altea Louisa Forrester was the daughter of Rebecca Forrester, oldest daughter still living in the home, and Unknown. Rebecca was also likely the mother of 3 more sons, John H., Andrew J., and James M. listed as living in the household of Atha McCoy in the Johnson County 1850 census. (2) William Daniel Manley Forrester was born April 4, 1859, the son of Altea Louisa Forrester and Unknown. It remains unknown but possible that Manley was the surname of William's natural father as no other explanation for use of this name exists. Altea Louisa Forrester and her son, William D. M. (age 1), are listed as boarding in the home of Peter Dougherty and Sara (Bailey) Dougherty in the 1860 Johnson County census. William (age 11) is listed as in the household of Peter and Sara in the 1870 Johnson County census. William (age 21) is listed as adopted in the 1880 Johnson County census although no adoption papers have yet been found. It is apparent that William was raised by Peter and Sara as a Dougherty. He assumed the Dougherty surname as did his descendants. (3) It has been incorrectly reported by a few genealogy researchers that Pleasant Palmer Proffitt was married to a Louisa Dougherty (Darty, Daugherty), born 1842, daughter of Andrew Jackson Dougherty. There are simply no facts to support this. A marriage certificate was issued for Pleasant Palmer Proffit and Louisa Forrester on September 13, 1862. It was not returned signed but that is not unusual during that day and time. The marriage is listed in the Johnson County, Tennessee marriage records. Pleasant Proffitt's first child, Sara Alice Proffitt, was born July 1863. There was scant time between the September 13, 1862 marriage certificate date and the July birth of Sara Allice for Pleasant to have ended his relationship with Louisa Forrester, courted, and have married someone else. The 1880 census for Johnson County, Tennessee listed Pleasant Proffit's wife as Aethia L. along with their correct children. The 1900 census for Johnson County listed Pleasant Proffit's wife as Altha L. with some of their children still living at the home. Pleasant and Louisa Proffitt were listed in the Johnson County 1910 Census, ED127, Sheet 1, with Corda, Julia and two granddaughters. (Altea) Louisa (Forrester) Proffitt died May 19, 1934 in Civil District #4, Johnson County, Tennessee. Her death certificate says she was the widow of Pless Proffitt. Her age was given as 96. This age agrees with the birthday for Altea Louisa Forrester who was born in March 1838. Louisa was buried in the Tester Cemetery on May 20, 1934. Her death certificate also stated that she was born in NC but did not list her parents. All of these facts point to Altea Louisa Forrester as the wife of Pleasant Palmer Proffitt. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Althea Louisa Forrester was the daughter of Rebecca Forrester and probably Calvin Farmer. Rebecca Forrester and John Farmer never married. Althea's first child was William Daniel Manley Forrester Doughtery. Rebecca and son William were living in the home of Peter Doughery and his wife, Sarah L. Bailey Dougherty in the 1860 US Census. William was later adopted by Peter and Sarah Dougherty and assumed their last name. After leaving the Dougherty household, Altea married Pleasant Palmer Proffitt, son of Jackson Proffit and Edith ?, September 13, 1862, in Johnson County, Tennessee. Pleasant was born 1834, in Cracker's Neck, Johnson County, Tennessee, and died about 1913. Altea died May 19, 1934, in Johnson County, and is burried in the Tester Cemetery. Pleasant Palmer and Altea Forrester Proffitt had the following known children: Sara Alice Proffitt (1863-aft. 1930) m. Thomas Preston Forrester (abt. 1853-1908) Mary C. Proffitt (1865-1880), never married. Cordelia Proffit (1867-1960) m. John F. Tester (1873-between 1920 and 1930) Eveline Profitt (1869-aft. 1920) m. John Forrester (1867-aft. 1920) Ollie Jane Profitt (1872-1958) m. Tapley Ward (1865-1944) Alvin Taylor Proffitt (1874-1947) m. Ollie Jane McElyea(1878-1917) Julia Katherine Proffitt (1876-1954) m. Stephen Marion Tester (1887-1922) Ida Proffitt (1879-between 1920 and 1930) m. Wiley Thomas Proffitt submitted by F. Pierce Pratt. William Daniel Manley Forrester Dougherty was my maternal great grandfather. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 1850 US Census, Johnson county, Johnson, Tennessee, United States Atha Forester«tab»«tab»«tab»«tab»Female«tab»65«tab»Tennessee Rebecca Forester«tab»«tab»«tab»«tab»Female«tab»30«tab»Tennessee Thomas Forester«tab»«tab»«tab»«tab»Male«tab»25«tab»Tennessee Andrew Forester«tab»«tab»«tab»«tab»Male«tab»22«tab»Tennessee John Forester«tab»«tab»«tab»«tab»Male«tab»16«tab»Tennessee Sarah J Forester«tab»«tab»«tab»«tab»Female«tab»14«tab»Tennessee Louisa Forester«tab»«tab»«tab»«tab»Female«tab»12«tab»Tennessee John H Forester«tab»«tab»«tab»«tab»Male«tab»9«tab»Tennessee Andrew J Forester«tab»«tab»«tab»Male«tab»5«tab»Tennessee James M Forester«tab»«tab»«tab»«tab»Male«tab»2«tab»Tennessee 1860 US Census, Johnson, Tennessee Peter Daugherty«tab»«tab»«tab»«tab»M«tab»39«tab»Tennessee Sarah L Daugherty«tab»«tab»«tab»F«tab»35«tab»North Carolina Elizabeth Baily«tab»«tab»«tab»«tab»F«tab»58«tab»North Carolina Atha L Forrester«tab»«tab»«tab»«tab»F«tab»25«tab»Tennessee William D M Forrester«tab»«tab»«tab»M«tab»1«tab»Tennessee 1870 US Census, District 04, Johnson, Tennessee, United States Pleasant P Profitt«tab»«tab»«tab»«tab»Male«tab»37«tab»Tennessee Atha L Proffitt«tab»«tab»«tab»«tab»Female«tab»31«tab»Tennessee Sarah Proffitt«tab»«tab»«tab»«tab»Female«tab»7«tab»Tennessee Mary C Proffitt«tab»«tab»«tab»«tab»Female«tab»5«tab»Tennessee Cordilia Proffitt«tab»«tab»«tab»«tab»Female«tab»2«tab»Tennessee Eveline Proffitt«tab»«tab»«tab»«tab»Female«tab»0«tab»Tennessee John Canady«tab»«tab»«tab»«tab»Male«tab»16«tab»Tennessee 1880 US Census, District 4, Johnson, Tennessee, United States Aethia L Prophet«tab»«tab»Wife«tab»«tab»Female«tab»40«tab»Tennessee, United States Sarah A Prophet«tab»«tab»Daughter«tab»Female«tab»16«tab»Tennessee, United States Cordelia Prophet«tab»«tab»Daughter«tab»Female«tab»12«tab»Tennessee, United States Eveline Prophet«tab»«tab»Daughter«tab»Female«tab»10«tab»Tennessee, United States Ollie Prophet«tab»«tab»Daughter«tab»Female«tab»8«tab»Tennessee, United States Alvin T Prophet«tab»«tab»Son«tab»«tab»Male«tab»5«tab»Tennessee, United States Julia C Prophet«tab»«tab»Daughter«tab»Female«tab»3«tab»Tennessee, United States Ida Prophet«tab»«tab»Daughter«tab»Female«tab»1«tab»Tennessee, United States 1900 US Census, ED 98 Civil Districts 4, 10, Johnson, Tennessee, United States Pleasant Proffitt«tab»«tab»Head«tab»«tab»Male«tab»68«tab»Tennessee Atha L Proffitt«tab»«tab»Wife«tab»«tab»Female«tab»62«tab»Tennessee Cordeelia Proffitt«tab»«tab»Daughter«tab»Female«tab»30«tab»Tennessee Julia Proffitt«tab»«tab»Daughter«tab»Female«tab»23«tab»Tennessee Ara J Proffitt«tab»«tab»Granddaughter«tab»Female«tab»6«tab»Tennessee Vanie Proffitt«tab»«tab»Granddaughter«tab»Female«tab»3«tab»Tennessee 1910 US Census, Civil District 4, Johnson, Tennessee, United States Pleas Proffitt«tab»«tab»Head«tab»«tab»Male«tab»77«tab»Tennessee Luisa Proffitt«tab»«tab»Wife«tab»«tab»Female«tab»71«tab»Tennessee Cord D Proffitt«tab»«tab»Daughter«tab»Female«tab»40«tab»Tennessee Jullie Proffitt«tab»«tab»Daughter«tab»Female«tab»35«tab»Tennessee Jane Proffitt«tab»«tab»Granddaughter«tab»Female«tab»16«tab»Tennessee Vannie Proffitt«tab»«tab»Granddaughter«tab»Female«tab»12«tab»Tennessee 1920 US Census, Civil District 4, Johnson, Tennessee, United States Lousis Proffitt«tab»«tab»Head«tab»«tab»Female«tab»80«tab»Tennessee (widowed) John Tester«tab»«tab»Son-in-law«tab»Male«tab»47«tab»Tennessee Cordia Tester«tab»«tab»Daughter«tab»Female«tab»52«tab»Tennessee Joseph Proffitt«tab»«tab»Great-grandson«tab»Male«tab»4«tab»Tennessee Varnie Foster«tab»«tab»Granddaughter«tab»Female«tab»23«tab»Tennessee 1930 US Census, District 04, Johnson, Tennessee, United States Luisea Proffitt«tab»«tab»Head«tab»«tab»Female«tab»92«tab»Tennessee (widowed) Coredalie Tester«tab»«tab»Daughter«tab»Female«tab»58«tab»Tennessee Jane O Cuddy«tab»«tab»Great-granddaughter«tab»Female«tab»2«tab»Tennessee -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
