P. Pratt, 2017 Dr. Franklin Pierce Pratt (Franklin Pierce8, Phillip Isaac7, Thomas Henry6, William5, William4, John3, William2, Griffin1), third child of Franklin Pierce Pratt and Sarah Matilda Richardson, was born May 3, 1885, in Rockingham County, North Carolina. He was only three when his father died. When Franklin was ten, his mother married, second, Joseph Land. He was raised in the Land household but not adopted, and retained the Pratt surname. He married Effie Idora Estridge, daughter of William Joseph Estridge and Ida Tallulah Austin, June 5, 1912, in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. She was born March 17, 1888, in Union County, North Carolina. Effie was eleven when her mother died and, as the oldest of six siblings, she became responsible for raising her younger sisters and brothers. Her father remarried and most of the children went to live with various Austin relatives of her mother. Effie received her first college education at the Old Asheville Normal and Teaching School in Ashville, North Carolina. She began teaching at small one-room schools in the mountains of North Carolina and Virginia. She met her husband to be while teaching and they courted in Rockingham County. After they were married they moved to Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina. Their only child, Franklin "Frank" Pierce Pratt, Jr., was born in Salisbury in 1916. Franklin used money he received from the sale of land inherited from his father's family in Rockingham County, to enter The Palmer School of Chiropractic, Davenport, Iowa, in 1918, and graduated June 24, 1921. He then opened a chiropractic office in Salisbury. The Pratts built a large two-story home in Salisbury at 528 Mitchell Avenue. The home still stands today. Effie taught third grade at nearby Wiley Elementary School. She returned to college and received her A.B. Degree in Education from Catawba College in 1937. She did post-graduate studies at North Carolina and Duke Universities. The Pratt's were members of the First Presbyterian Church in Salisbury. Dr. Pratt continued his chiropractic business in Salisbury but by the late 1930's was in declining health. He died at home January 3, 1943, and is buried in the Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina (Find A Grave Memorial # 852433). Effie continued teaching at Wiley School and was honored as Salisbury's Teacher of the Year in 1962. She retired a few years later. She was active in the Rowan County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), serving, at one time, as its Regency. She was also active in the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Effie suffered a heart attack while fishing on High Rock Lake and died October 28, 1968. She is buried alongside her husband in the Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina (Find A Grave Memorial # 85243389, 852433). Pratt, Jr., a student at Atlanta Southern Dental college with active army connection; a sister, Mrs. Ida Dean of Reidsville, a brother, Raymond Pratt of Pittsburg; a half-sister, Mrs Louis C. Perhaps the following explanation will help explain the confusion. The first Franklin Pierce Pratt (b. 1852) was the son of Phillip Isaac Pratt and Nancy Webb Harris. It is likely, but not proven, that he was named for soon to become president Franklin Pierce who was elected in 1852 and served as president from 1853 - 1857. Franklin Pierce Pratt (b. 1852) married (1873) Sarah Matilda Richardson and from the union were born 3 children, Raymond Warren Pratt (b. 1874). Elsie Lillian Pratt (b. 1876) and lastly, Franklin Pierce Pratt (b. 1885). The first Franklin Pierce Pratt (b. 1852) died 3 years following the birth of his son Franklin Pierce Pratt (b. 1885). Sarah Matilda Richardson (Pratt) remarried Joseph Henry Land in 1895. It is unlikely that Franklin Pierce Pratt (b. 1885) knew much of his father. No record exists of the Pratt children being adopted following Sarah's marriage to Joseph Land and they all maintained their Pratt surname. Franklin Pierce Pratt (b. 1885) married (1912) Effie Idora Estridge and from this union, one child, Franklin Pierce Pratt, Jr. (b. 1916), was born. The official birth certificate has his name as Franklin Pierce Pratt, Jr. (b. 1916). His father, Franklin Pierce Pratt (b. 1885) from then on was referred to Franklin Pierce Pratt, Sr. Throughout Franklin Pierce Pratt, Jr.'s (b. 1916) early childhood, he was referred to as "Junior". Franklin Pierce Pratt (Sr. b. 1885) died in 1943. Franklin Pierce Pratt, Jr. (b. 1916) married (1943) Helen Frances Dougherty and from this union were born two children, Franklin Pierce Pratt (III, b. 1943) and George Carroll Pratt (b. 1945). Franklin Pierce Pratt (III, b. 1943) official birth certificate has his name as only Franklin Pierce Pratt while his certificate of live birth has his name as Franklin Pierce Pratt, Jr., adding to the confusion. However, from then on, Franklin Pierce Pratt (III, b. 1943) most legal documents has him as Franklin Pierce Pratt, III (b. 1943). Franklin Pierce Pratt, III (b. 1943) married (1967) Martha Ellen Van Goor and from this union were born two children, Franklin Pierce Pratt, IV (b. 1968) and Gregory Charles Pratt (1971). Franklin Piercc Pratt, IV, birth certificate has his legal name as Franklin Pierce Pratt, IV. Franklin PIerce Pratt, IV (b. 1968) married (2000) Debroah Jean Morris and from this union were born two children, Abigail Jean Pratt (b. 2003) and Franklin Pierce Pratt, V (b. 2004). The use of the suffix Sr., Jr., III, IV, and V with their names may not be generationally correct but are the legal suffix for each individual. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1900 US Census, Henry County, Virginia Joseph Land«tab»«tab»Head«tab»«tab»M«tab»58«tab»Virginia Sarah M Land«tab»«tab»Wife«tab»«tab»F«tab»43«tab»Virginia Mattie E Land«tab»«tab»Daughter«tab»F«tab»18«tab»Virginia Sarah M Land«tab»«tab»Daughter«tab»F«tab»3«tab»Virginia Frank P Pratt«tab»«tab»Stepson «tab»M«tab»15«tab»N Carolina Elsie G Pratt«tab»«tab»Stepdaughter«tab»F«tab»11«tab»N Carolina United States Census, 1910 Name«tab»Franklin P Pratt Event Type«tab»Census Event Date«tab»1910 Event Place«tab»Charlotte Ward 3, Mecklenburg, North Carolina, United States Gender«tab»Male Age«tab»24 Marital Status«tab»Single Race«tab»White Race«tab»White Relationship to Head of Household«tab»Roomer Relationship to Head of Household«tab»Roomer Birth Year (Estimated)«tab»1886 Birthplace«tab»North Carolina Father's Birthplace«tab»North Carolina Mother's Birthplace«tab»Virginia Sheet Letter«tab»A Sheet Number«tab»8 1920 US Census, Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina Frank P Pratt«tab»«tab»Head«tab»«tab»M«tab»35«tab»North Carolina Effie Pratt«tab»«tab»Wife«tab»«tab»F«tab»30«tab»North Carolina Frank Pratt«tab»«tab»Son«tab»«tab»M«tab»3«tab»North Carolina O?In Estridge«tab»«tab»Brother-in-law«tab»M«tab»22«tab»North Carolina 1930 US Census, Salisbury, North Carolina Frank B Pratt«tab»«tab»Head«tab»«tab»M«tab»45«tab»Virginia Effie E Pratt«tab»«tab»Wife«tab»«tab»F«tab»40«tab»North Carolina Franklin P Pratt«tab»«tab»Son«tab»«tab»M«tab»13«tab»North Carolina -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------«tab»
