a. Note:   Barbara was the daughter of John Hammer (7 July 1739-12 November 1817) and
 Margaret Kopp Hammer. John Hammer came to Washington County in the early
 1780`s along with his brother, Baltis Hammer, and settled on Knob Creek.
 John was a justice of the peace for Washington County for many years. During
 the period of the State of Franklin (1784-1788), he was loyal to North
 Carolina. In 1787, he was one of several justices appointed to locate the
 best place in the county for a new courthouse and stocks. He and his wife
 were early members of Sinking Creek Baptist Church. In 1817, John Hammer
 left a will, giving his property to his wife and children. Children of John
 and Margaret Kopp Hammer: Jacob; Joseph; Barbara Range; Elizabeth Kelly;
 Mary Bogart; Isaac; John, Jr.; and Jonathan.
