Pratt, 2017 Dr. Franklin Pierce Pratt (Franklin Pierce8, Phillip Isaac7, Thomas Henry6, William5, William4, John3, William2, Griffin1), third child of Franklin Pierce Pratt and Sarah Matilda Richardson, was born May 3, 1885, in Rockingham County, North Carolina. He was only three when his father died. When Franklin was ten, his mother married, second, Joseph Land. He was raised in the Land household but not adopted, and retained the Pratt surname. He married Effie Idora Estridge, daughter of William Joseph Estridge and Ida Tallulah Austin, June 5, 1912, in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. She was born March 17, 1888, in Union County, North Carolina. Effie was eleven when her mother died and, as the oldest of six siblings, she became responsible for raising her younger sisters and brothers. Her father remarried and most of the children went to live with various Austin relatives of her mother. Effie received her first college education at the Old Asheville Normal and Teaching School in Ashville, North Carolina. She began teaching at small one-room schools in the mountains of North Carolina and Virginia. She met her husband to be while teaching and they courted in Rockingham County. After they were married they moved to Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina. Their only child, Franklin "Frank" Pierce Pratt, Jr., was born in Salisbury in 1916. Franklin used money he received from the sale of land inherited from his father's family in Rockingham County, to enter The Palmer School of Chiropractic, Davenport, Iowa, in 1918, and graduated June 24, 1921. He then opened a chiropractic office in Salisbury. The Pratts built a large two-story home in Salisbury at 528 Mitchell Avenue. The home still stands today. Effie taught third grade at nearby Wiley Elementary School. She returned to college and received her A.B. Degree in Education from Catawba College in 1937. She did post-graduate studies at North Carolina and Duke Universities. The Pratt's were members of the First Presbyterian Church in Salisbury. Dr. Pratt continued his chiropractic business in Salisbury but by the late 1930's was in declining health. He died at home January 3, 1943, and is buried in the Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina (Find A Grave Memorial # 852433). Effie continued teaching at Wiley School and was honored as Salisbury's Teacher of the Year in 1962. She retired a few years later. She was active in the Rowan County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), serving, at one time, as its Regency. She was also active in the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Effie suffered a heart attack while fishing on High Rock Lake and died October 28, 1968. She is buried alongside her husband in the Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina (Find A Grave Memorial # 85243389, 852433). Helen Dougherty (1920, TN-2013, NC) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Obit From the, Salisbury Post, Oct. 29, 1968 Mrs. Effie Estridge Pratt, 79, of 601 Mahaley Ave., who retired in 1962 from 38 years of service as a public school teacher in this area, died Monday at 4:30 p.m. from a heart attack suffered while visiting a friend at Panther's Point, located in eastern Rowan County. Coroner Rufus Honeycutt said Mrs. Pratt was standing on a pier fishing when she apparently suffered the seisure. She fell forwrd into water about four feet deep and was found floating face down. She was born March 17, 1889, in Mecklenburg County. Mrs. Pratt attended Asheville Normal School, graduated from Catawba College in 1937 with an AB degree, and did graduate work at Duke University and the University of North Carolina. In 1962, while a third grate teacher at Wiley School, she was honored as Salisbury's Teacher of the Year. She had served as president of the NCEA primary teachers and president of the South Piedmont and local classroom teachers organizations. At one time, she held the regency of the DAR and served as president, secretary, and treasurer of the UDC. A member of the First Presbyterian Church, she had served as secretary of the Rumple Bible class. Her husband, Dr. Franklin Pierce Pratt, Sr., died in 1943. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Tom Mckinney of Charlote and Mrs. Grace Hill of Reno, Nev.; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the Lyerly Funeral Chapel by the Rev. H. L. Underwood, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, and the Rev. Norman M. McDowell, associate pastor.
