P. Pratt, 2017 Charles Benton Pratt (Phillip Isaac7, Thomas Henry6, William5, William4, John3, William2, Griffin1), sixth child of Phillip Isaac Pratt and Nancy Webb Harris, was born June 13, 1858, in Leaksville, Rockingham County, North Carolina. He married Clara Eliza Jones, daughter of Calvin G. Jones and Elizabeth Ann, about 1885, in Rockingham County, North Carolina. Clara was born February 7, 1861, in Rockingham County, North Carolina. Charles moved to Madison in Rockingham County with his brother, Thomas Ruffin Pratt, to establish a hardware Store. The two brothers opened and operated a general merchandise store located in the south half of the Carter-Moir Hardware Store. The two-story building that housed their general merchandise store is located in the Leaksville Commercial Historic District and is included in the National Register of Historic Places. It is a two-story brick building built in the 1880's and noted for its decorative brickwork. The building may also have housed the Bank of Leaksville, chartered in 1889. The store was later named "Pratt Hardware and Furniture Company". They sold farm implements, household hardware, building supplies and funeral supplies. They were the local agents for Oliver Plow Company and sold Majestic wood kitchen ranges. Charles also was livestock agent and sold horses, mules, and other livestock. He bought the Richard Aiken two-story frame house, built in 1842, on West Decatur in Madison and began building his own two-story home on the corner of Decatur and North Market Street that was completed in 1892. The Queen Ann house is one of Madison's most beloved homes, and was used, in the 1980's, as antique store and finally placed on the National Historic Register. For a short time, Charles and his brother, Thomas, operated a separate funeral home that continued into the 1920's before being dissolved. Clara died October 1, 1924, and Charles died February 12, 1928, in Leaksville, Rockingham County, North Carolina. Both are buried in the Riverview Cemetery, Madison, Rockingham County, North Carolina (Find A Grave Memorial # 30658973, 30659019).
