P. Pratt, 2017 Dr. Franklin "Frank" Pierce Pratt, Jr., (Franklin Pierce Pratt9, Franklin Pierce8, Phillip Isaac7, Thomas Henry6, William5, William4, John3, William2, Griffin1), first child of Dr. Franklin Pierce Pratt and Effie Idora Estridge, was born April 19, 1916, in Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina. His father was a chiropractor and his mother a schoolteacher in Salisbury. He was raised in the two-story house his father built at 528 Mitchell Avenue, in Salisbury, attended Wiley Elementary School, Boyden High School, and Catawba College in Salisbury. His grandfather, the first of the Franklin Pierce's died when Frank's father was only three. Consequently, Frank's father was locally known a Frank, Sr., and Frank was known as Frank, Jr. After Frank graduated from Catawba College, he enrolled at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine intending to become a physician. He left there and enrolled in Atlanta Southern Dental College, in Atlanta, Georgia. During his occasional visits home from school in Atlanta, he met Helen Frances Dougherty, daughter of George Carroll Dougherty and Tillie Levicy Carriger, a nurse at Rowan County Memorial Hospital, in Salisbury, on a blind date. They continued to see one another when Frank would return to Salisbury from dental school in Atlanta. Frank graduated from Atlanta Southern Dental College, February 10, 1943, with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery. Frank's mother, Effie, wanted Frank to marry a local girl of her liking, so Frank and Helen eloped and were married less than two weeks after Frank graduated from dental school. They were married February 21, 1943, in Helen's parent's church, in Johnson City, Tennessee, in the presence of Helen's family. After a brief honeymoon, Frank enlisted in the US Army during World War II. He completed his field training June 17, 1943, in Field Medicine and Surgery, at the Medical Field Service School, in Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. He was then assigned to Camp Rucker, Coffee County, Alabama and was joined by his new bride. It was there that his first son, Franklin Pierce Pratt, III, was born, December 16, 1943, in an Army field hospital, while Frank was on maneuvers. In June 1944, Frank was transferred to Fort Riley, in Manhattan, Kansas. The family lived temporarily in Manhattan and also in Springfield, Missouri. By December of the same year, Frank was transferred to Marysville, California, to the new Beale Air Force Base. Frank continued to serve in the US Army, as a dentist and dental surgeon for wounded soldiers returning from the Pacific Front. While stationed in Marysville, their second son, George Carroll Pratt was born, August 2, 1945. As the war with Japan came to a close, Frank was promoted to the rank of Major in June 1946, and encouraged to pursue a career in the military. Frank, however, wanted to return to the private sector and was honorably discharged from the Army, September 7, 1946. The family, with two young sons, returned to Frank's home in Salisbury. There, Frank opened his dental office on the second floor of the Hanaford Building, directly above the Innes Street Drug Store, on the corner of Innes and Main streets in Salisbury. Frank, Helen, and their two young sons, lived with Frank's widowed mother in her home at 528 Mitchell Avenue. They joined the First Presbyterian Church in Salisbury. Frank began the task of growing his dental practice and Helen became a stay-at-home mother. They joined the Salisbury County Club where Frank would play golf with the other doctors and dentists on Wednesday afternoons and Helen would take the boys to swim at the club's swimming pool. Each summer, the family would vacation with other doctor's families at Ocean Drive Beach, South Carolina. Frank's dental practice grew and he became a well-known member of the Salisbury community. He was noted for his jolly and friendly character. With his dental practice growing, Frank had a new office built on Church Street that he opened in 1958, and was active in the North Carolina Dental Association. Then suddenly on March 2, 1960, Frank suffered a cerebral hemorrhage while driving his car in Salisbury. He was admitted to Salisbury Memorial Hospital and immediately taken to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. The following day he was to be transported to Duke University Hospital in Durham when he suffered a massive cerebral hemorrhage and died just after noon. His services were conducted at the Presbyterian Church in Salisbury and he was buried in one of the Pratt family plots in the Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Salisbury, North Carolina (Find A Grave Memorial # 85243418). Following Frank's death, Helen returned to nursing and was employed at the Salisbury Veteran's Hospital. In 1962, Helen had a house build in the newly Colonial Estates subdivision, at 240 Richmond Rd., and moved there with her two sons. As her sons entered adulthood and one left for college, and the other for military service, she was pursued by some of Salisbury's best available men. In 1964, she met, Clay Rufus Miller, son of Thomas Lee Miller and Mary William Austin, a widower, successful insurance salesman, and member of the Salisbury County Club. They were united in marriage March 13, 1965, at the First Presbyterian Church, with the blessing of their children. Clay died June 5, 1987, following an extended illness, and is buried with his first wife in the City Memorial Park, in Salisbury (Find A Grave Memorial # 93989318). Following Clay's death, Helen married, third, E. L. "Dick" Dare, a widower, on July 15, 1989, at the First Presbyterian Church in Salisbury. After a lengthy honeymoon, the couple returned to Dick's summer home in Cape Coral, Lee County, Florida. There, Dick suffered a reoccurrence of his lung cancer and died six months after they were married, January 13, 1990, in Cape Coral. He is buried with his first wife in the Brown Family Cemetery, Lemont, Cook County, Illinois (Find A Grave Memorial # 26827503). Helen, having outlived three husbands, continued to live in the home she built in Salisbury until her death, October 27, 2013, in Salisbury, and is buried with her first husband in the Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Salisbury, North Carolina (Find A Grave Memorial # 134032018). Franklin and Helen Dougherty Pratt had two known children: Franklin Pierce m. (1) Martha Ellen Van Goor (2) Becky Lynn Stroup, and George Carroll Pratt m. Sarah Ellen Moss. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Helen Frances Dougherty was born prematurely on April 11, 1920 and weighed only 3 1/2 pounds. Dr. Jim Prease, who made the delivery, stopped by the next day and asked "at what time did the baby die?" From Family Bible written by Helen's mother, Tillie Carriger: "Baby Helen walked around the bed to the side of the couch 6 mos. old she could stand alone and walk around chairs at 8 mos. and sis dad dad and hi, hi and wave bye bye had 6 teeth and no hair she could walk alone just fine the day she was 10 mos. and walked alone at 9 mos." ______________________________________ OBIT Salisbury Post (NC), Wednesday, October 30, 2012 Helen 'Pete' Dare SALISBURY - Helen "Pete" Dougherty Pratt Miller Dare, 93, of Salisbury, passed away Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center.
