Joseph Henry Land was born in Irisburg Dist., Henry Co., Aug. 30, 1842. In June 1861 he enlisted in Co. A., 42nd Va. Inf. an soon became first Sergeant of his company. He engaged in the battles of Cedar Run, Chancellorsville, The Wilderness, Winchester, Bunker Hill and Gettysburg. He was captured May 12, 1844 at Spottsylvania Court House with 3,300 men and taken to Point Look Out, Md. and later transferred to Elmira, N. Y. In Nov. 1866, he and (1st wife) Miss Eliza HOPPER were married. To their union were born the following children who survive: Mrs. J. A. HOPPER and Mrs. C. A. MEADOW, both of Reidsville, N.C.; J. H. LAND Jr. of Oklahoma. In January 1892 he and Miss Sallie Shackelford (2nd wife) were married, but she lived only a short while afterwards. In September 1895, he and Sarah RICHARDSON PRATT (3rd wife) were united in marriage, and to this union was born one child. They lived in Reidsville, N. C. At the time of his death he was living in the house of his daughter in Garham, N.C. He was active til the last, having fully dressed, gone to the bathroom on Sunday morning, August 23, 1925, where he fell as a result of a blood clot moving to his heart. He never regained consciousness, breathing out his last in a few moments. Interment was in Greenview Cemetery, Reidsville, N.C., where his body sleeps beside that of his last wife [Sarah] who died last March. Interment was in Greenview Cemetery, Reidsville, N.C., where his body sleeps beside that of his last wife [Sarah] who died last March. ----------------- Joseph Henry Land A Native of Henry county, Virginia, Joseph Henry Land ws born in Isisburg district, August 30, 1842, and spent the larger portion of his hlong and useful life in his native county. He came to youth and young manhood during the stirring scenes immediately preceeding the Civil war. With the fires of patriotism burning in his young breast and with a deep desire to serve his native state and the cause of the Confederacy in the struggle for what was conceived to be its rights, young Land did not wait for the call, but at the age of eighteen he hastened to volunteer, and was enlisted June 1861 in Company A, 42nd Virginia infantry. By his genial disposition and brave spirit he soon became first sergeant of his company. He was in active service during the war till the battle of Spottsylvania Court House, May 12th, 1864, when he and the entire brigade including about 3,300 mem were captured and taken to Point Lookout, Md., where he remained for three months before being transferred to Elmira, N.Y., where re remained in prison until the close of the war. After peace was declared and the prisoners all liberated Mr. Land returned to his native county of Henry and with that indomitable will and courage that had carried through the hardships and privations of war, set about to retrieve his personal fortunes and rebuild his native state. In November, 1866, he and Miss Eliza Hopper, also of Henry county were happily unitied in marriage. To this union were born the following children who survive: Mrs. J. A. Hooper, Reidsville, N.C.; Mrs C. A. Meadow, Reidsville, N.C. and J. H. Land, Jr. of Oklahoma. In January, 1892 he and Miss Sallie Shackelford were married but she died after a short time. September, 1895 he and Mrs. Sara Richardson Pratt were married and to this unio was born one daughter, Mrs. L. C. Allen, Graham, N.C. Late in life Mr. Land united with the M.E. church while living in Leaksville, N.C. and remained a consistent member till God called him home. At the time of his death, he was living in the home of his daughter in Graham, N.C. He was active till the last having fully dressed and gone to the bathroom on the morning of his death, where he fell as the result of a blood clot moving to his heart. He never regained consciousness and died in a few moments. The funeral was conducted from the home of his daughter in Graham, N.C.; and interment followed in Greneview cemetery, Reidsville, N.C., where his body sleeps beside that of his last wife who preceded to the grave last March.
