Pratt, 2017 Charles Benton Pratt (Phillip Isaac7, Thomas Henry6, William5, William4, John3, William2, Griffin1), sixth child of Phillip Isaac Pratt and Nancy Webb Harris, was born June 13, 1858, in Leaksville, Rockingham County, North Carolina. He married Clara Eliza Jones, daughter of Calvin G. Jones and Elizabeth Ann Ray, about 1885, in Rockingham County, North Carolina. Clara was born February 7, 1861, in Rockingham County, North Carolina. Charles moved to Madison in Rockingham County with his brother, Thomas Ruffin Pratt, to establish a hardware Store. The two brothers opened and operated a general merchandise store located in the south half of the Carter-Moir Hardware Store. The two-story building that housed their general merchandise store is located in the Leaksville Commercial Historic District and is included in the National Register of Historic Places. It is a two-story brick building built in the 1880's and noted for its decorative brickwork. The building may also have housed the Bank of Leaksville, chartered in 1889. The store was later named "Pratt Hardware and Furniture Company". They sold farm implements, household hardware, building supplies and funeral supplies. They were the local agents for Oliver Plow Company and sold Majestic wood kitchen ranges. Charles also was livestock agent and sold horses, mules, and other livestock. He bought the Richard Aiken two-story frame house, built in 1842, on West Decatur in Madison and began building his own two-story home on the corner of Decatur and North Market Street that was completed in 1892. The Queen Ann house is one of Madison's most beloved homes, and was used, in the 1980's, as antique store and finally placed on the National Historic Register. For a short time, Charles and his brother, Thomas, operated a separate funeral home that continued into the 1920's before being dissolved. Clara died October 1, 1924, and Charles died February 12, 1928, in Leaksville, Rockingham County, North Carolina. Both are buried in the Riverview Cemetery, Madison, Rockingham County, North Carolina (Find A Grave Memorial # 30658973, 30659019). This house was built about 1840 by the Aiken family. It is three stories high. No known descendants are now ia Madison. Judge Aiken came back to a 1910 Shuck reunion at the Baptist Church. After being widowed, Mrs. Aiken, now Jane Carter, married W. R. J). Lindsay, postmaster until his death in 1879. The post oflBce was a small building in the front yard. Several famihes Hved there after the Lindsays. It was purchased by Charles Benton Pratt, ownership later being transferred to his daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Guy H. Simpson. At present Mrs. Simpson Hves there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- There were a number of tailors in town operated by Lewis, Smith, and Milton Stamps. Dressmaker, Martha Stamps; wagonmakers, Van- dergood and Martindale. Madison had at least one hardware and mule sale place operated by T. R. and C. B. Pratt. Jeweler, J. M. Tesh; pho- tographer, Archibald Watidns; stonemason, Peyton Newman; bnck- mason, William Jones; brickmaker, James Foust; and building contrac- tors, WHliam Hegwood and Joseph Whitis. -------------------------------------------------------------------- PRATT BROTHERS COMPANY The brothers, C. B. and Thomas R. Pratt came to Madison by 1890 from Leaksville, N. C. to establish a hardware company. They bought Lot 31 of the original map of Madison, which is the north-east corner of Murphy Street at Market The brothers constructed a frame building on this site and commenced business. A friend of theirs, C. S. Hamlin, who lived in Stoneville, went into business with them and the company was known as "Pratt Bros. & Hamlin". Sometime in the fall of 1894 they built a 2-story brick building on this lot It is not known how long Hamlin stayed in the business. There is a letterhead of 1927 indicating the name of the business is Pratt Hardware & Furniture Co., successors to Pratt Bros. Co. They sold farm implements, household hardware, building supplies, funeral supplies and equipment and were local agents for Oliver Plow Co. In addition, they sold Majestic wood ranges for the kitchen. By October of 1930, they were known as Pratt Hardware Co. Pratt Bros, was also a funeral home. It is not clear if they were in the funeral service from the beginning of the company. The earliest record found is of a death on August 13, 1912 of Odell Alley who was born in 1905. He died of a gunshot wound at the age of 6 years, 11 months, after surviving for 2 hours. This funeral business continued through the 1920s. Charles Benton Pratt, Sr. died in 1928 and his brother, Thomas Ruffin Pratt in 1931, after which the business was dissolved. In 1934, G. £. McDaniel leased the building for The Madison Furniture Co. for two years. Dell Wall operated Deltona Beauty Shop on the second floor of this building and also lived in the adjacent upstairs apartment About 1936 the U. S. Post Office leased this building and stayed here until April of 1941 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ROCKINGHAM DRUG CO. Little is known about the short-lived Rockingham Drug Company. It was organized on the 19 th of September 1908 by eight men with $3,000 in stock. The men were: T. R. Pratt, C. B. Pratt, R. M. Cardwell, S. F. Webster, Dr. J. H. Ellington of Sandy Ridge, N. C, Dr. J. A. Roach, E. Jones and Dr. J. T. Taylor. The physical location of this business has not yet been determined.
