Jack was born about 1802 Siam, Co. Tennessee. He died after 1870. He was an epiletic and never married. His father, Abraham, made a conditional will to his son, Joel Dunlap Nave, of 240 acres on the condition that he take care of his brother, John (Jack). This contract was secured by a $1000 bond made by Joel to guarantee performance. [Carter Co. Tennessee Deed Book K, p 284]. After Joel died, Jack lived with his cousin, William H. Nave, in the Horseshoe Community. His uncle, Andy Nave, told the story that one morning during the Civil War, a group of Confederate soldiers stopped at the house of Joel D. Nave, who was absent and demanded breakfast from his wife. When they entered the front room they saw Uncle Jack Nave sitting at the fireplace poking and staring at a log in the fireplace. He did not move or even look at the soldiers who decided that he was just a harmless old man. The soldiers left their rifles and pouches stacked near the front door while they ate. Immediately after they left the room, Jack sprang up and removed gunpowder and lead from each ofthe pouches and filled his pockets. He then returned to his position in front of the fireplace. The rebels ate, retrieved their weapons and gear and left, not knowing that they had been robbed! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
