Note: :::::ITEMS --- Daniel Smith's framed portrait > Picture, Notes/Quotes ...large, hand-drawn, w/original frame [2007-2012, original picture] ...I was told by my father that his dad met with "Aunt Cindy" Smith, his dad's cousin, at her request and she informed him that she 'needed a good home' for a couple of pictures. W.N. and Fern took the large pictures of Daniel Smith and Abigail Hartley Smith, I am supposing, after "Old Jim" Smith, John N.'s firstborn, died. Grandpa asked Dad if he wanted the pictures and obligingly he took them. This prompted him to want to know more about the man in the picture so Grandpa and Fern obliged, met with "Aunt" Cindy, and then Fern forwarded the information to Dad in 1966. [JDS] ...These came into my possession between 2007 and 2012. [JDS] :::::PICTURES --- Portrait of Daniel Smith > Notes/Quotes, Picture ...I remember seeing Dad (James Eli Smith) inscribing Daniel Smith's name low on the picture when he had removed it from the frame once. I believe he did that with Abigail's picture, also. Dad said he wanted others to know who were in the pictures when he (Dad) wasn't around anymore. [JDS] ...Framed, wall-hung, large, hand-drawn, original portrait (circa 1870) [2007-2012, original picture] :::::CORRESPONDENCE Name, Notes/Quotes, Residences, Birth, Marriages, Spouses, Children, Death, Lifetime, Religious/Societal, Variant Spelling, Burial/Cemetery, Picture, Other --- "__Dec 22 1966...[William N.] (and) Fern [Smith]...Dear Folk (Jim) [and Amanda] (Smith), We found this much of the record of Daniel Smith who is the man you have the__Picture of. Parentheses are shown as they are in the two sheets of genealogical material, but I have added them to the notecard at the beginning. Brackets enclose comments that I made for clarification. Double underscore begins a page. Dad told me several times that he thought "Aunt" Cindy, who was his father's cousin, had written the newspaper item quoted in the material. The exhibit is a notecard with the information written on two sheets of paper, front and back, and no extant envelope. JDS ...Ever since Dad gave me the letter from William N. & Fern Smith dated December 22, 1966, on December 27, 2002 and with my daughter's earlier request for help in her 4-H project "because you know all the names," I had been researching alongside her for the extra brain and eyes everyone needs who does genealogy. I had heard repeatedly the stories from Dad and his sister, Mary Joan, and her husband, Uncle Bob Burton, who seemingly had come to a standstill on the Joseph Coats questions and were ready to abandon everything to the probability that all the records were destroyed when a tornado wiped out Coatesville, Indiana. I found out by doing genealogy that I am a link in my endless line of impetuous, stubborn Smiths. Dad and I had visited his brother, Jean, on a Friday and among other things brought up the subject of Joseph Coats. Uncle Jean said he didn't know anything more than what was known or believed by our family of Smiths, but Tipton, Indiana, had their sesquicentennial celebration a few years earlier and Jean said they had a "Joseph Coats story." I made arrangements with Uncle Jean to bring my daughter, Meredy, with me on Monday to guide us and we would all go to the library in Tipton to research. Meredy and I showed up and went to the Indiana Room at the library with Uncle Jean and found out posthaste that "way'll they don't have a story but the newspaper" mentioned Coats' name several times. I had been devoting time to the problem and narrowed the field to four Joseph Coats' in Ohio and Indiana and realized immediately that we did not have time to look at the papers or study them on microfilm. I had studied feverishly since getting the letter and then going to the library in Tipton with my daughter and Uncle Jean. This was relatively early in computer genealogy and I don't think Newspapers.com was even thought of by then. I sent Meredy to do research on the computer on the 1900 census and Uncle Jean and I turned to other names in other files. So, we all were getting nowhere fast -- Coats' or Smiths! I brought out the original letter from Uncle Jean's and Dad's father and stepmother which letter I needed to guard with my life. Jean said he had never seen it before. He read it and asked a lady in the Indiana Room if she could help us and her response was she was doing her own research and did not work for the library. Here is where the Smith stubborness shows up. Uncle Jean, after looking things over again, went to the lady again, this time with the letter, and ask her again if she could help us. She did not know Uncle Jean nor me from a man in the moon, but she took the letter and read it and looked at us and said that her husband was related to Joseph Coats and that she had some material at home and that we shouldn't go anywhere because she would be right back. In a few minutes she returned with eight pages of material for us and wanted copies, front and back, of the two pages of the letter. We obliged. She did not know, nor did we, how she would change our view of our ancestors. Oh! And I'm related to her husband on my mother's side of the family. Thank you Mrs. Ava Ogden for helping us. (No, I did not leave Meredythe there). My speculation at this point in my research is that the fellow is Daniel Smith (b. 1807) and the gal is Nellie Harrison (Daniel's first wife). They had been married two years at the time of this census and it would be two years more before they would acquire property by land grant in Clay Twp., Hamilton Co., and then another year and a few months until Nellie dies childless. I have reason to believe that Nellie is Carah's sister.
