Note: :::::CORRESPONDENCE Name, Notes/Quotes, Residence, Marriage, Spouse, Death, Variant Spelling --- "__Dec 22 1966...[William N.] (and) Fern [Smith]...Dear Folk (Jim) [and Amanda] (Smith), We found this much of the record of Daniel Smith who is the man you have the__Picture of...Love [signed]" [continuing] "__What we found out about the Smith pictures 'Daniel Smith born May 1 1807 in North Carolina while an infant moved ^to^ the state of Ohio with his parents and lived with them until 11 years of age then was "bound" to Joseph Coats until 21 years of age --- moved to Marion county Indiana at the age of 12 years In May 1828 was married to Nellie Harrison Lived with her for five years. She died there were no children by this union Second marriage to Abigal Hartley July 8 1834 10 children were born to this Union -- Five died The five that lived were David Smith Sally Lovell Nancy Gray John N. Smith Daniel Smith (W.N. Smith's father)..." [27DEC2002, original notecard, w/encl.] ...Carats designate Fern's additions. Parentheses are shown as they are in the genealogical material, but I have added them to the notecard at the beginning. Brackets enclose comments that I made for clarification. Double underscore begins a page. (See Daniel Smith, 1807-1893, for the complete letter.) JDS --- Clay Township. Other Early Settlers. "1832...Daniel Smith..." ... Clay Township. The First Death. "There were then [1830] no cemeteries in Clay, and many of her pioneer citizens sleep 'the sleep that knows no waking' in graves more or less remote from the scene of their labors. The Farley Cemetery, in Delaware Township, and the Whitinger Cemetery, in the northern part of Marion County, were the usual burial places until 1838." 1830 U S CENSUS -- Indiana, Hamilton Co. -- 1 June 1830 (official census day)---p. 3 > Birth, Spouse, Residence, Notes/Quotes --- "Harrison Carah W...males...(< 5) 2, (20 to 30) 2...females...(< 5) 1, (5 to 10) 1, (15 to 20) 1, (20 to 30) 1..." ...There is an extra male in the 20 to 30 yr. range and a female who is not the daughter of Carah Harrison and his wife in the 15 to 20 yr. range living in this household. My speculation at this point in my research is that the fellow is Daniel Smith (b. 1807) and the gal is Nellie Harrison (Daniel's first wife). They had been married two years at the time of this census and it would be two years more before they would acquire property by land grant in Clay Twp., Hamilton Co., and then another year and a few months until Nellie dies childless. I have reason to believe that Nellie is Carah's sister.
