Herndon, Eliza Lewis, Charles H. Herndon...that they are the legitimate (children of struckthrough) dependent Relatives brothers and sister of Georg[e] W. Herndon...he left no widow surviving him nor father or mother...That the mother was married under the name of Elizabeth Crouch to William Herndon..."

Colee, ...declare...That William Herndon, Father of George W Herndon, dec. died at Shelby County Ind on the 16th day of Oct 1862 of Typhoid Fever...Wee were neighborrs of the Deceased, and have Personal Knowledge of the facts..."

Brot. & Sisters, George W Herndon dec...we[Copelands] were Neighbores[sic] of the aforesaid Claimants and know of their Births...Said Children are the Legitimate Heirs of William Herndon, dec. Father of George W. Herndon, dec. and Elizabeth Herndon, dec. Mother of George W. Herndon, dec. and Brothers and Sisters of said decease Soldier...we were both present when the Parents were married Nov 16 th 1842. Knowledge of the facts herein stated were derived from personal acquaintance..."
... 07 Apr 1888 - Bureau of Pensions - Copy of Marriage Return of William Herndon & Elizabeth Crouch - "A copy of Marriage return of Williiam[sic] Herndon and Elizabeth Crushe[sic]...A Copy of Marriage returns of Wm Herndon & Elizabith Crouch...Owen County to wit: I do certify that on the 16" day of November 1842 Celebrate the rites of matrimony between William Herndon & Elizabeth Crouch of this County, agreeable to the rules of the church to which I belong. Witnefs my hand this 22" day of December 1842 [signed] Joseph Crouch...State of Kentucky Owen County I J B Martin Clerk of the County Court from the County and State aforesaid certify that the forgoing is a true & correct copy of the Marriage returns of William Herndon and Elizabeth Crouch as found of record in this the Owen County Court Cerks office. In the matter of Brothers and Sisters of George W Herndon, dec, who was a Corporal...Jerome Copeland...and Nancy O Copland...declare...That we were neighbors of the aforesaid Parties, (mistake) the Parents of said Soldier, (mistake) George W Herndon, dec...That we made a former affidavit as to being at the Wedding and Marriage of said Parents of sold...That we were very close neighbors and one affiant was present at the Birth of said deceased Soldier, who was Born on or about Oct 13th 1843, said child being a Legitimate heirr of William Herndon dec. and Elizabeth Herndon, dec. and a Brother to the Claimants...[signed] J. W. Copeland Nancy c. Copeland"

Parents of the aforesaid deceased Soldier George W Herndon, dec. That said George W Herndon, was Born October 13th 1842, said George W Herndon, dec. being a Legitimate Child of William Herndon, dec. and Elizabeth Herndon, dec. That this affiant knows the above facts from being an uncle of the said George W. Herndon, deceased...[signed] John S. (his X mark) Herndon..."
... 21 Aug 1893 - Original Pension of (Minor Children struckthrough) Dependent Brothers and Sister - "...(Charles H. Herndon struckthrough), Mary Eliza Herndon, now Lewis, and Joseph N. Herndon, (Children struckthrough) [dependents] of George W. Herndon...Submitted for Ad. Aug 21, 1893...DATES SHOWN BY PAPERS...Last Marriage, of Parents Nov. 16, 1842. Death of Mother, Oct. 19, 1862. Death of father Oct. 16, 1862." (Source 6) This form is different than another form dated 21 Aug 1893. We have noticed several items have been crossed out or struckthrough on it. Due to the fact we received a copy from NARA, it seems that this form had been submitted with another form bearing the same date, yet no action nor approval was taken on this form. JDS/MKF
