...Carats designate Fern's additions. Parentheses are shown as they are in the genealogical material, but I have added them to the notecard at the beginning. Brackets enclose comments that I made for clarification. Double underscore begins a page. (See Daniel Smith, 1807-1893, for the complete letter.) JDS
...I believe "Old" Daniel being "bound" to Joseph Coats when 11 years old, which is the same year (1818) that "Grandpa" Daniel died, signifies the death of "Old" Daniel's mother who, were she living, would have kept the family together as so amply illustrated in "Grandpa" Daniel's will. Furthermore, James' inability to keep the family together could not destroy his hope for the best for his family members. No evidence of bond or guardianship has been discovered yet in this matter. "Daniel Smith of the County of Hamilton in the State of Indiana...quit claim...the one undivided half of the said South half of the quarter section...after the decease of James Smith, [word unclear] to the last will and Testament of my grandfather Daniel Smith decd...   --- We have deduced from Daniel Smith's will that James Smith married twice, and that the second wife was previously married to Mr. Adams. Support for this comes from the fact that Jacob Smith was of age in 1817, and Daniel's step-granddaughter, Elizabeth Adams, was given two years to claim her inheritance after he died.  ... Considering item seven in "Grandpa" Daniel's will and exhibit no. 11 in the accounts envelope, we find that James was the father of Jacob and Moses Smith, whom might be thought of as infants at the time of Daniel Smith's decease. We have found no reason not to attribute them to [Mrs. Adams]*, James' second wife. For full information on Source 7, please see entries under Daniel* Smith (died 1818, Miami Co., OH). JDS/MKF
