We know that he - died on the 25 of Nov. 1897 - and both saw him die and were present at his funeral. We have a large family Bib(le) before us, which belongs to the family of the deceased sold - ier which is dated '1873' We have often seen it in the home of the claimant...We find recorded the birth of all his children by former wives but there being no children by any former wife under 16 yrs of age we only copy the names of his children by last wife, the above named claimant, who are all under 16 yrs of age. 'Jesse Jessup was born January 10.th 1891 in Tipton Co. Ind.' 'Ralleigh Jessup was born July 14.th 1892 in Hamilton Co. Ind.' 'Jennie Jessup was born Dec. 19.th 1893' 'John J. Jessup was born July 21.st 1896' All of the above entries are in the handwriting of - above named dead soldier. We know as we are well and per-sonally acquainted with his handwriting. We find an addition-al entry made since his death which is in the handwriting of the claimants mother Sarah Bragg. 'Samuel B. Jessup was born Nov. 25.th 1897' This child was born about 6 hours after its father died. We know personally that all of the dates above are correct...and that dead soldier has no children by any former wife under 16 yrs of age at his death...and that above named children are all living and in the care of their mother...Affiants...[signed] Alfred O. More than likely, Jesse was born in Hamilton County at home with the doctor attending. JDS ... 9 Apr 1898 / WIDOW'S PENSION. / "Claimant (Trivena marked through) ^Della^ Jessup P. O. Jessup...and Andrew J. Moore...who...declares that...they knew of his marriage on the date that it occured; that the above named soldier brought the claimant (t typed over h)o his home the day he was married and lived within a quarter of a mile of him until he died. They know that his son Jesse was born about four months after he married the above named claimant. They know that the dead soldier recognized the son as his own, treated the child the same as either one of the other children. He always told us that it was his child. We again repeat that the soldier in his life time frequently told us that it was his child. It was never questioned in the neighborhood at any time but what the child Jesse was his son by above named claimant. We make this afft. for the reason that the name of the son Jesse has (b typed over n)e(e typed over o)n left off of above named claimant's Pension Certificate. We believe that the name Jesse should be written on Pension Certificate; the widow's or(i typed over g)inal No. was 666,668 and her present Ctf. No. is 462,451. (Handwritten 462,461 at the top of the page.) We have no interest in this case whatever, except good will for the claimant and a kindly feeling toward her orphan children. We know that for more than a year previous to the date of this claimant's marriage to soldier above named, that her former husba(n typed over d)d had been in the penitentiary and was at that time to the best of our knowledge, and that claimant above named applied for and received a divorce from her former husband before marrying (x-ed out typing error) this dead soldier, on account of the fact that her husband was in the penitentiary...[signed] Iredell H Jessup (Affiant) [signed] Andrew J. moore [sic] (Affiant)...this 18.(th) day of Nov. 1898...And I read this affidavit over to affiant before taking the acknowledgment...[signed] Maude I. Dale (Notary Public)" ...There is a note which I believe belongs to this General Affidavit that is incomplete, but some sense may be made of it as follows: "[ ? ] (o)f Law Division, Pension Department, Washington, D. C. [Ple]ase file this afft. with an appeal and other afft[. received sin]ce yesterday in this entitled case.
