Note: :::::ITEMS --- Abigail Hartley Smith's framed portrait > Picture, Notes/Quotes ...large, hand-drawn, w/original frame [2007-2012, original picture] ...I was told by my father that his dad met with "Aunt Cindy" Smith, his dad's cousin, at her request and she informed him that she 'needed a good home' for a couple of pictures. W.N. and Fern took the large pictures of Daniel Smith and Abigail Hartley Smith, I am supposing, after "Old Jim" Smith, John N.'s firstborn, died. Grandpa asked Dad if he wanted the pictures and obligingly he took them. This prompted him to want to know more about the man in the picture so Grandpa and Fern obliged, met with "Aunt" Cindy, and then Fern forwarded the information to Dad in 1966. [JDS] ...These came into my possession between 2007 and 2012. [JDS] :::::PICTURES --- Portrait of Abigail Hartley Smith > Notes/Quotes, Picture ...I remember seeing Dad (James Eli Smith) inscribing Daniel Smith's name low on the picture when he had removed it from the frame once. I believe he did that with Abigail's picture, also. Dad said he wanted others to know who were in the pictures when he (Dad) wasn't around anymore. It is unclear if the picture in the lodge hall is of the soldier or his son or neither. I have not seen it and can not make an estimation concerning it possibly being wrongly attributed to this family. JDS ...Carats designate Fern's additions. Parentheses are shown as they are in the two sheets of genealogical material, but I have added them to the notecard at the beginning. Brackets enclose comments that I made for clarification. Double underscore begins a page. Dad told me several times that he thought "Aunt" Cindy, who was his father's cousin, had written the newspaper item quoted in the material. Abigal's calculated birthdate is 17 Jun 1816 for this source. The exhibit is a notecard with the information written on two sheets of paper, front and back, and no extant envelope. (See Daniel Smith, 1807-1893, for the complete letter.) I disagree with this presentation of fact. I counted the names down from the top and up from the bottom, thereby establishing the appropriate line using the well-defined column of persons in agriculture to show me the line that included the marks for those residents of William Hartley's household. The paper, the ink(?), time and storage, if not something else, caused fading and deterioration in the original copies. It appeared to me that, after a few perusals on four different occasions, the fading and deterioration were hiding something. I was able to determine that several marks in the columns labeled "16 to 26" and "26 to 45" of the females were nearly invisible including a mark for William Hartley's wife. Thus, the "Total All Persons..." for me is 6. William's age is 26-44, his wife's age is 26-44, another female is 45+, two girls are <10 and another girl is 10-16. Please see the notes attached to William* Hartley.
