 1820 U S CENSUS -- Ohio, Adams Co., Monroe Twp. -- 7 August 1820 (official census day)---pp. 26, 27, 28, 29 >
Name, Birth, Spouse, Children, Marriage (insinuated), Residence, Notes/Quotes, Variant Spellings
 --- "William Hartley...males...(26 to 45) 1...females...(< 10) 2, (10 to 16) 1, (26 to 45) 1, (45 <) 1, (Foreigners Not Naturalized) 1...(Persons engaged in Manufacture) 1..."
...The lid for this material shows "Total All Persons...3" and "Number of Persons - Engaged in Agriculture: 1." I disagree with both presentations of fact. Pages 26 and 27 show the totals for Sprigg Twp. which gives a person the sense of where the columns are when coupled with the faded lines showing at the top and bottom of pages 27 and 29. Therefore, William Hartley is involved in manufacture. I counted the names down from the top and up from the bottom, thereby establishing the appropriate line using the well-defined column of persons in agriculture and William Hartley was not in agriculture. But, this same method showed me the line that included the marks which were for those residents of his household. The paper, the ink(?), time and storage, if not something else, caused fading and deterioration in the original copies. It appeared to me that, after a few perusals on four different occasions, the fading and deterioration were hiding something. I was able to determine that several marks in the columns labeled "16 to 26" and "26 to 45" of the females were nearly invisible including a mark for William Hartley's wife. Thus, the "Total All Persons..." for me is 6. William's age is 26-44, his wife's age is 26-44, another female is 45+, two girls are <10 and another girl is 10-16. I'm assuming Hartley's wife was born in 1792 and William, himself, to be born after 1775, which does allow for a 10-year-old daughter who is difficult to attribute to the 45+ yrs. lady who might be William Hartley's sister or mother [not proved]. This extra person might be unrelated but the information given is too inspecific to prove. JDS
 1830 U S CENSUS -- Ohio, Adams Co., Monroe Twp. -- 1 June 1830 (official census day)---p. 17 >
Name, Birth, Spouse, Children, Residence, Notes/Quotes, Variant Spellings
 --- "William Hartley...males...(40 to 50) 1...females...(10 to 15) 1, (20 to 30) 1, (40 to 50) 1..."
...It appears to me that the 45+ yrs. female from the 1820 census is either dead or has moved elsewhere and, more than likely, Squire Hartley was born during the fall of 1830 and was not available for the census. Less likely is the possibility that William reported to the enumerator that he was currently married and that his wife was living in Hamilton Co., IN, during the incapacity of her father and did not know of the birth of his son. This census caused me to adjust Sarah's age to the point that I think she may be Thomas and Mary Morris' firstborn child. Again, maybe Sarah did not know her own birth year, nor William's, and William, likewise. JDS
 MARRIAGE RECORD BOOK A 1843-1851 HAMILTON COUNTY, INDIANA---p. 143 >
Name, Notes/Quotes, Variant Spelling, Spouse, Marriage, Marriage License, Residence
--- "...a marriage license was issued to Layton Moore and Sarah Hartley...at Noblesville this 22.nd day of July A. D., 1846. [signed] John G Burns Clerk (of the Circuit Court). The marriage of whom is thus certified: State of Indiana, Hamilton county. I, the undersigned, a Justice of the pe(a)ce do hereby certify that Layton Moore and Sarah Hartley were legally joined together as husband and wife, on the 22.nd day of July 1846, by me. [signed] Benjamin Wheeler J. P. (seal) (Filed August 5 1846.)"
...With apprehension I approach this subject of the marriage of Sarah Hartley and Layton Moore. First, there was not an abundance of people of marriageable age with their names living in Hamilton Co., IN, in 1846. That doesn't mean that they are, or are not, who I think they are. Next, I have reason to believe that both individuals lost their previous spouses prior to July 1846. Again, that only demonstrates a need for companionship and care within the elderly community. Finally, relatively speaking, they, or others with their names, were neighbors on the 1840 census of Adams Twp., Hamilton Co., IN. I am demonstrably related to William Hartley's wife, Sarah, Laton Moore, John Moore, John Gray, and Daniel Smith within that neighborhood southwest of Bakers Corner. Did Sarah and Layton do this as a joke? Did someone do this as a prank? It appears to me that Layton Moore and Sarah Hartley made their way to Noblesville and were married by Benjamin Wheeler, Justice of the Peace, after securing the license from John G. Burns, Clerk of the Circuit Court. Were they in on this, too? If they are my relatives, the elderly couple made their way back home, but, the marriage did not survive to 1850 where on the census I find Sarah as Sarah Hartley living with her son, Squire, and Layton Moore living with others of his relatives, I believe.
