--- "...April 27, 1999...Bob (and) Joan [Burton]...Dear Dan [Smith] and Family: As we promised, we are sending you the pages from Joan's various DAR applications which show the lineage from her to the Revolutionary War patriot and those which describe the nature of their services. Her original application was based on John Mills; the four approved supplemental applications were for Nicholas Barker, Matthew Osborne, Jr. (Osborn), Benjamin Pickett (Piggott), and Thomas Jessup. The supplemental application for Isaac White has not yet been submitted, but its approval should be almost automatic. There may even be others. We think there is a Dale and possibly a Billingsley and others, but we have not found the necessary information to document them. Both DAR and SAR have recognized the services of 'patriots' as well as those who were in the military. Joan's approved ancestors all were Quakers who did not bear arms, but they supported the cause by providing supplies, furnishing money, providing aid for injured soldiers, etc. Patriots also include those on various local committees, in Congress, editors who spoke out against the British, etc. You will note that the first five generations on all six applications are the same. From there on names are of Anna Cordelia Jessup's parents and various grandparents and great grandparents. Blood descendants of these people are eligible for membership, including you, your father, and your children. We have copies of all the documentation which verifies the information on the applications. Should any wish to pursue applications we can make copies of the documentation. We enjoyed our visit and were especially pleased to see how far your mother has come. It's a slow process, but she seems to be on the right road. Love, [signed]" [Letter heading includes (Robert E. The letter came with a rudimentary, handwritten, partial pedigree and six partial DAR applications in a small, metal-clasp envelope that has no address, return address, nor postage upon it.
