I was born (like everybody else). My mother had to go to the Lying-in-Hospital in downtown Manhattan by the "El". A new mother was allowed to stay in the hospital for about a month with her baby until she was allowed to go home. At that time my mother, father (Bill) my sister, Lillian and I lived with my grandmother , Mollie at 200 W. 81st Street in Manhattan, N.Y.C, where she kept a "rooming house". The apartment had about five small bedrooms, a living room, kitchen and bathroom and the "Dark Room". Originally, it was probably intended as either a maid's room, or for storage. It was entirely an inside room; no windows; only a ventilation glass over the door. We must have lived there until I was about 2 or 3 and then we moved down to 79th street into our own "rooming house."I really can't remember too much about living at 200 West but here goes: One time I found a pair of grandma's scissors (she was at one time, a dressmaker), and proceeded to cut my hair in my crib. When the deed was discovered, I was yanked out of the crib and rushed downstairs to the nearest barbershop where he shaved my head. From then on I was called "Shavey-Head" until, of course it grew back in. I was accused of eating a soap eraser, the candles on my birthday cake, and drinking a baby bottle of milk where a hot pepper had accidentally been left in the pan warming my milk. My mother was furious. We moved shortly after that.
