The Health Department continued to record marriages until 1937. Consequently, there are potentially TWO entirely separate records of a marriage for the time period from 1908 through 1937—
 the Health Department Certificate and
 the City Clerk License/Affidavit/Certificate.
Although the information in both series is duplicative, the City Clerk series includes additional information: parents of the bride and groom, country of birth, and the bride's occupation.

Five Points House of Industry (The) (founded 1850, incorp. in 1854), 155 Worth St. Devoted mainly to the preservation of children from suffering and crime. Provides a temporary home for children who are orphans, or whose parents are unable to care for them ; offers a cheap boarding- place for the children of such as are able to partially support their children, but who must break up their homes, living at service, to earn enough to pay their way ; and admits children whose parents are sick and must go to a hospital, and keeps such until the patients have recovered ; receives women, who desire situations as servants, giving them shelter until employment is found, they meanwhile do the work of the Institution. Capacity for 400. The Home Missionary visits in the vicinity, and temporarily relieves with food and clothing in their homes urgent adult cases ; its Day School, for inmates only, provides regular instruction, with classes for manual and domestic training, 996 pupils last year. In the Infirmary and Free Dispensary, 147 Worth St., the children and adults of the Five Points are treated, and the seriously sick are visited and relieved at their homes. In 1894, 654 inmates were received in the Home and 1507 patients were cared for. Maintains also a Sunday-school at 2 P.m., and a Children's Service Of Song, to which all are welcome, Sundays at 3.30 P.m. Supported by voluntary contributions, donations, and public funds. Since the Home was opened there have been over 28,000 inmates, and 45,000 children have been in its SCHOOL. Receipts for 1894, $49,297 ; expenditures, $33,075. Morris K. Jesup, Pres. ; George F. Belts, Secy. ; Hugh N. Camp, Treas. ; Win. F. Barnard, Supt., to whom apply at any hour.
Named for the points created by the intersection of Park, Worth, and Baxter streets, the neighborhood was known as a center of vice and debauchery throughout the nineteenth century.
The most infamous site in the Five Points district was the "Old Brewery," a rotting frame building that allegedly housed as many as 1,200 people. Streets surrounding the Old Brewery were named "Murderers' Alley" and "The Den of Thieves," and by mid-century a number of Irish gangs with such picturesque names as the "Plug Uglies," "Dead Rabbits," and "Roach Guards" controlled the area.
In 1852, the Ladies Home Missionary Society purchased the Old Brewery and replaced it with the Five Points Mission -a chapel and parsonage, school house, a bathing room, and dwellings for poor families. But before the Old Brewery was demolished, the Society offered tours of the squalid building. These tours and an increasing number of newspaper exposés on tenement conditions provided middle-class citizens with vivid evidence of the terrible poverty that existed in New York.
