Note: Kyrkoherde (vicar) 1394-1423 in Hackås (Z) (S: DN III:517, 685, 693; DN VI:365; DN XIV:60), väpnare (esquire) and hemmansägare (freehold farmer) in Hov, Hackås (Z). Karl Pedersson belonged to the so-called Hackåslinjen (Hackås branch) of the Skanke family. A hemmansägare is synonymous with a farmer if the person also owned a farm (hemman=jord- eller skogsbruksfastighet), but a hemmansägare could own a hemman without using it for productive purposes (e.g. cultivation the soil, logging, etc.), in contrast to a farmer. If the person rented (arrenderade) a farm, he or she was called arrendator or landbonde, who could be part owners (delägare) of a hemman. The term hemmansägare became common first in the early 1900s. In skrivna urkunder (written records), Karl Pedersson appeared the first time in 1394 and the last time in 1428, and appear to have lived on Hov in Hackås the whole time (S: Ahnlund, p.295). In 1394 he bought the farm Solkastada in Hackås from Markus Nilsson and Radgerd Torgautsdotter. His name appeared first in the debt letter (skuldbrev) where 116 jämtar (people from Jämtland) admitted a debt (600 mark) 1410-09-10 on the part of the county to Uppsala domkyrka (cathedral) and Queen Margareta (S: DN XVI:60). In 1427, Karl Pedersson sold the Våle gods in Hackås (except the forest at Storsjön) to Olof Fastesson for 10 or 16 Jämtland mark (S: Behm, 1913, p.151). Karl Pedersson was a wealthy, respected, and influential man (en betydande man) (Behm, p.63; Ahnlund, p.295). The information about Karl Pedersson`s (Carolus Petri) date of death can be found in an inscription on his tombstone (S: Ahnlund, p.295).
