Note: "LEIGH or LEE"--- The 1900 Census of Perquimans Co reflects her birth as May 185 6 a n d i n NC. This date is in conflict with her tombstone and deat h cer t . whic h states Nov 1855. Her death cert provides "Leigh" as her middle name (informant w a s s o n Benj.) ; tombstone is "Lee". Her stone is large and her hus ba nd w a s "wealthy, apparently powerful, and most important, still a liv e". G iv en the foregoing, I can't rationalize R.B. Thach allowin g th e ston e cu tter to get away with a mistake. If so, the mistake w as o f the so n, B. W. who signed an incorrect death cert. Census of 1900 states that Annie had given birth to eleven childr e n ( b etween 1878-1900) with only four surviving to 1900. I was onl y a bl e t o arrive at nine of the eleven. Regardless, The early years of " Annie's" life (before and duri n g t h e first year of the Civil War) are known to have been spent i n G louc es ter Co., VA. Following the war her father, a methodist min iste r, wa s p osted to several other counties of lower Virginia. In Gloucester Co, the family lived in, on, or around Belle Roi Plan t a t ion south of Gloucester Point in VA, a short distance from Willi am sb ur g. It was in this location that her father was ministering wh e n h e wa s commissioned in the CSA. Early in 1862, Annie, her mothe r , an d broth er Willy evacuated Gloucester Co. upon the approach o f Fe dera l Troop s and while there is nothing to prove it, I believ e the y may h ave gon e to her mothers family in Hertford Co., NC. Annies mother, Mary Harrell, is known to have been alive in earl y 1 8 6 5 as she is named in the estate papers of her father, Abner Ha rrel l . It was during this time th a t An ni e met the widowed R. B. Thach. They were married in 1878 i n th e lar g e Methodist Church in Hertford. The church is still in us e Very little of a personal nature is known about Annie. Her name w a s p r obably Anne (named after her fathers mother) and Annie was pro ba b l y a nickname although Annie is what is on her tombstone and dea t h ce rt . Her death in 1917 was caused by cancer of the stomach.
