Note: Richard Benjamin Thach, the only son of Benjamin W. and Martha Lav i n i a Thach, was born in Chowan County on 10 Fob. 1850. He moved t o Pe rq ui mans County with his parents about 1865. On 15 May 1873 h e was m arr ie d to Elizabeth Ann Burke at the house of Elisha Burke i n Chowa n Cou nty . The ceremony was performed by Baptist minister Tre zevant H arriso n. E lizabeth Ann died within five years, having give n birth t o two da ughte rs, only one survided to adulthood, Rosa Burk e Thach wh o marrie d Georg e W. Chappell. R.B. remarried in 1878, taking Annie Leigh Garrett to be his wi f e o n S eptember 5th of that year, the ceremony conducted at The Met ho dis t Epi scopal Church, South in Hertford where the brides father , Jo shu a Leig h Garrett, had been pastor in 1876-1877 during which t ime R .B . met Ann ie. R. B. Thach became one of Perquimans County's leading farmers. Hi s b u s iness properties included a steamboat, The Yeopim, and a fishe ry . H e a dvertised in 1891: "R. B. B. Thach died on 30 Dec. 1928 of uremia coma due to Bright's dis e a s e. The Hertford News reported on 3 Jan. 1929: OBIT Richard Benjamin Thatch, aged 79, a farmer of this County for 60 y e a r s died Saturday morning at 7:30 at the home of his son, Ben, ne a r He rt ford. Funeral services were conducted at the residence an d a t the g rav e by Mr. Taylor and the Rev. M. Y. Self. Living in Perquimans County for the greater part of his life, alth o u g h he was born in Chowan, moving to this county as a boy of 15, B en ja mi n Thatch, deceased, at one time was considered one of the wea lth ies t o f the farmers of the county, and he owned a great deal o f land . He was married twice. The first time to Miss Elizabeth Burke of Ch o w a n County, by which union there were two children, Lavinia and Rosa, both of whom are d e a d . After the death of his first wife, Mr Thach remained a widower fo r s o m e time, later marrying Miss Annie Leigh Garrett and by this un io n th re e children survive him, who are: Mrs. C. B. Parker, Mrs. W . N . Tuck er , Mr. Ben Thach. About year ago friends of Mr Thach began to notice a change in h i s m a nner and attitude to that of a sick man physically. Usually al er t a n d active, his slightly bent figure gave signs of a losing fig h t wit h n ature and old age, and he has been sick about a year. A mo nt h ag o he w as put to bed. Saturday morning the end came. The funeral services were held in the home and the final rites w e r e s aid at the graveside. Miss Sallie McMullen, Mrs Tom Sumner, M r s R . M . Riddick, Jr., Mr louis Anderson and Mr C.P. Morris sang " I n th e Swee t By and By" and The Old Rugged Cross" and later at th e gr ave s ang "Go od Night". The Active pallbearers were C.B. Parker, W.N.Tucker, Z.V. Eure, C . F . R eed, G.W. Chappell, J.E. Everett. The Honorary pallbearers we r e W. A. F elton,Wilson Reed, J.T. Brinn, J.O. Felton, and J.T.Britt. Out of town relatives included: Mr and Mrs Elbert White, Mrs. Jam e s M o ore, Mr. Z.V. Eure, Mrs. Ruth Ballance and her son, Mr. Benjam i n Ha l l Ballance, all of Norfolk, Va.; Mrs W.O. Elliott and famil y an d Mr s . D.M.
