Mac , a s h e w as known throughout his life, was born in Newark, NJ on Ap ri l 22 , 1921 , the only son of Marshall and Mae Finley Congleton. In 1941, Mac began college at Clemson University planning a car e e r a s a Civil Engineer, as was his father. Following the bombin g o f Pe ar l Harbor, Mac enlisted in the USMC in early 1942 and was a ssig ned t o t he aviation arm of The Corp as a Flight Engineer/Mech , servi ng i n th e Pacific until war's end. Following the war, he rem ained i n serv ice u ntil 1962 and was honorably retired at MCAS Cherry Point as a MSGT. From 1962 - 19 8 3 , h e was an employee of The Naval Aviation Rework Facility. In 1951 Mac married Julia E. (Willis) Thatch of New Bern by who m h e h a d two children; Marshall III and Julia Ann. He also acquire d a s teps on , Phillip B. Thatch Jr. Mac was predeceased by Julia i n 1982 a n d a sec ond wife, Maxine Gilbert, in 1996, and his only sib ling, Ja n e C. Hughe s of San Antonio, TX in 2010. Surviving are his son, Marshall III of Raleigh and his two childr e n , S hannen and Steve; daughter, Julia C. Hadder (Gerald) of Windso r , V A an d their sons, Tommy and Doug. Also surviving is stepson, Ph il li p Thatc h (Margaret) and their four children, Cheryl Stricklan d (Da n) , Nancy D avis, Susan Williams (Hunter), and John David Thatc h (Sue ) ; as well a s their ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandc hildre n , all of New B ern. He is also survived by special friend Pamela Hatley of New Bern. Mac was an active member of Riverside United Methodist Church a n d a 5 5 -year member of the Craven County Group of AA and had pre-ar ra nged f o r his remains to be donated to The Brody School of Medicin e a t ECU. A memorial service will be held at Riverside UMC on Saturday, J u n e 2 1 at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends following the serv ic e. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mac's memory may be sent to Ri v e r side UMC, 405 Ave A, New Bern, NC.
