Note: While my earliest record (at the moment) concerns Moses Gillam, evi d e n ce suggests that Moses is descended from JOHN GILLUM whose Wil l w a s pr obated in Surry Co. VA on September 20, 1738. In his Will , Joh n G illu m left to his son, John "......my plantation in Carrali no o n Roan oke ( river) and all the lands thereto belonging...." The above geography was at that time within Bertie Co (formed in 1 7 2 2 ) but presently lies at the border between Northampton and Halif a x C ou nties; Northampton was formed directly from Bertie in 1741 a n d Hali fax , indirectly from Bertie (through Edgecombe Co.) in 1758 . H ence, J OH N GILLUM's plantation was located (at that period of ti me ) within t h e boundary of Bertie Co. Northampton records of the period 1741-1749 list several person s w i t h surnames spelled Gillam, Gillum, Gilliam, and Gillham. Give n na m e me ntioned are John (presumed benefactor of the Will mentione d abo ve ), Hi nch and Levi (also mentioned in the above Will), Willia m, Har ris , Robe rt, and Jesse. It is considered that any of the above could have been the fath e r o r g randfather, etc., of Moses Gillam From Gillam Family Papers provided by Thomas Gillam III of Windso r , B e rtie Co., NC "Elder Moses Gillam was born in Virginia in 1758 and he died in 1 8 2 3 a t the age of 65. Brother Gillam, after conversion and ordinati o n , beca me the pastor of Outlaw's Chapel. Strange to say this man , th ou gh a Ba ptist preacher, possessed considerable wealth. Yet obe yed P aul 's injun ction to the rich-ready to distribute as the poor c ould t esti fy who ha ve received his bounties. He married Winnifred R hodes 1 793 o n Novembe r 5. He was grandfather of Rebecca Craig, moth er of Br acksto n Craig an d Governor Locke Craig." Upon his death in 1823, the property of Moses was left to his wif e W i n nifred. The settlement of his estate named his daughters Penny Pearce and E l i z abeth Pugh. Also sons William, Thomas (who married Frances ..... .. . ) , Wilie J., and Benjamin. His Will was probated in Bertie Co. and can be found in WB-G/114
