  Born in Martin Co (1860 census)
  Beyond the census data of 1860 and 1880, Robert is found in the N e w B e rn City Directory of 1880/81 living on "New South Front St., n ea r Sp ri ng St" and is not listed again until the directory of 1904/ 0 5 wher e h e is found living at " # 4 New South Front St., (west fr o m # 8 Spr in g St.), Fisherman". By that date Robert had been marri e d about 4 1/ 2 y ears and had two living children. He is not liste d i n the only cit y di rectory between those periods (1893).
  Robert and his family lived on New South Front St. (same address) t h r o ugh 1912, but in the meantime he had given up on fishing and we n t t o w ork for The City Water Dept, becoming a laborer.
  He moved to 206 S. Front St. by 1914/15 and to # 18 Spring St bet w e e n 1921-1926. Sometime between 1926 and 1934 (the year he died ) h e a n d his wife moved to what was then known as 138 Pollock St (k no w n a s # 722 Pollock since re-numbering took place in the 1940's).
  Robert, according to his obituary found in the Sun Journal on Tues d a y , Mar 6, 1934, died on the previous Saturday (Mar 3) at 1:30 p m "a ft e r an illness of more than two weeks with heart trouble" . Hi s Dea t h Ce rtificate reports cause of death as Auremia & Bronchial P neumon i a wit h a contributary cause due to Brights Disease.
  His obituary further reported Robert as a long time City Employee ( P l u mber/Fitter) with the Water Department. Funeral services were h e l d o n Sunday at 4pm from the home on Pollock St. and officiated b y B ro ad S t. Christian Church minister, Rev. John L. Goff and assist ed b y R ev E . C. Gaskill of St. Mary's Church. Pallbearers were F. G . God foy , Clif f Daniels, Edward Clark, L.A. Davis, C.D. Lancaster , and A . L . Bryan , all employees of the City.
  The obituary stated that "Mr. Hawkins had worked for the City Water w o r ks Dept. since 1895 and was held in the highest regard by City o ff ic ia ls and citizens.
