Notes
a. Note:   Only a few records have been found regarding Samuel Hawkins.
  1) 1860--He is first found, along with wife Nancy and infant son, R o b e rt, in Williamston, Martin Co., NC during that years census. Sam u e l i s listed as age 35 (age in conflict with later information) a n d hi s oc cupation is that of "Swamper". "NANCY" (name on this censu s ) is k eepin g house and age 28 (her age is also in conflict with la te r data) . Thei r only known child, Robert, is listed as age 1 altho ug h on th e date o f the census he was 3-months---according to his to mbs tone.
  2) Samuel Hawkins, Private, is listed in NC Troops of The Civi l W a r . I obtained his service record from The National Archives. Sa mue l " en rolled" for service as a volunteer for one-year in Marti n Co a nd w a s "mustered" into service in Beaufort Co. as part of Cap t. Will iam L an iers Independent Company on November 4, 1861. This C ompany , initia ll y formed a part of the 42nd regiment but was re-des iginate d in Sept . 1 862 as Company H, 61st Regiment NC Troops.
  3) Samuel was detailed on Feb 1, 1863 as a ship's carpenter on Gunb o a t s at Wilmington, NC and records report him as " accounted for a t W il mi ngton until Dec 1864 . No further records".
  4) The only other record is of his pay voucher; for three-month s ( N o v 1862-Jan 1863) for $33.00 and for a $50.00 Bounty for extend in g h i s enlistment for 2-years in June 1862.
His accountability thru December 1864 coincides with the final att a c k s by the Union forces on Wilmington (Ft. Fisher). It is possib l e th a t Samuel was killed or taken prisoner and subsequently died w hi l e a pr isoner. Most of those captured along the coastal regions o f t h e sout h were transported to Point Lookout, MD for internment. T he a bo ve is o nly a theory and nothing has been found to support wha t bec am e of him
I have not located him prior to the 1860 Census nor at any point be y o n d his military record through December 1864. Not even his wife a n d s o n have been located on the 1870 Census. However, the June 188 0 c ens u s listed his wife and son in New Bern, Craven Co., NC. Hi s wif e wa s l isted as a "widow". When she became a widow is unknown
