Based on the 1790 /180 0 ce ns us, his complete name was likely William Barnabas Ballanc e. Th ere a r e too many William's on these earlier census to decipher . "Barney" shows by name on the 1810 Currituck Co Census with 5 mal e s a n d 6 females in the household. The oldest of each sex is withi n t h e 2 6 - 45 category. Taking a mid-point for estimated birth woul d ha v e Bar ney born about the beginning of the Revolution. His wif e Eliza be th, b y convention, would have been a little younger. Regarless---The following concerning "Barney Ballance" was take n f r o m the Spring 1999 Edition of "High Tide's", published by the H yd e Co . , NC Genealogical Society. Located in The Craven Co. Library . "Although we do not find Barney Ballance, a farmer, in any of th e H y d e Census records, we know he was in Hyde County by 8 October 1 82 7 wh e n he loaned Aaron Ballance $30.00. As security, Aaron gav e 1 be d an d b ed stid, 1 cow called Buff, and 1 Cow called Flours sm allest . If A aro n paid the debt by 5 November, the bill of sale fo r the fur nitur e an d livestock was void. [Hyde Deed Book U, p. 208] Barney Ballance died before 30 November 1829 when Major Clark [poss i b l y his wife's father or brother], John Credle, and Samuel Master s b ou n d themselves in the amount of $6,000. The condition of the bo nd w a s th at Major Clark was administrator of the estate. Elizabeth Ballance, widow of Barney Ballance, petitioned the Nove m b e r Term 1829 Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions for her year's a ll ow an ce. She stated in the petition that he died intestate on 11 N ove mbe r 1 829 and she asked a year's allowance for herself and famil y. An inventory was taken. 13 February 1830 by Major Clark, administra t o r , and was returned to February Court 1830. An account of sales t ot al in g $196.90-1/2 was returned to February Court 1830. [Hyde Coun t y Est at e Papers, Division of Archives & History] A clue to the identity of some of the heirs of Barney Ballance is f o u n d in a deed from William D. Ballance to Green Bridgman dated 1 8 Oc to be r 1849. For $110 William D. sold eleven acres and 17 pole s of la n d o n the east side of Swan Quarter Bay adjoining the land s of Natha ni el C redle, it being part of the land known as the Barne y Ballanc e lan d, an d which William D. Ballance "heired" from the de ath of hi s mothe r an d sister. Barney Ballance's land was bounded b y the lan d of Rober t Mid yett, "now belonging to Nathaniel Credle, " then north west with t he las t mentioned line to another post in th e division li ne between G reen Br idgman and Anson Credle, then south west to the pu blic road, wi th the p ublic road southeast to the begi nning. [Hyde De ed Book 3, pp . 158-159] William D. Ballance is found in Hyde County's 1850 Census livin g i n t h e Mattamuskeet District with the Robert Ballance family (hi s bro ther ) . He is a laborer who is 25 years of age . William D. Bal lanc e was k no wn as "Bill Barney" Ballance. He was born 1825, marrie d # 1 Mahali a G . Spencer, and #2 Mrs. Sarah Ann Midyett Roper, and d ie d 1873. H e is b uried in Amity Church Cemetery, Lot 84 with Rober t an d Elizabet h Balla nce and their son David Benjamin Ballance.
