Palmer, a chai r an d g ig m aker. He was in Hyde's Census in 1840 living between Ben jami n Bal lanc e (his brother) and George Mydgett in the Mattamuskee t Dist rict . He wa s head of household, 20 to 30 years of age (born c a. 1810 -20) . Also i n the household was 1 male born ca 1825-1840 , 2 males un der 5 , his wif e of the same age, and 5 slaves. In February 1840, Tilmon Sawyer was apprenticed to Robert Balla n c e a s a gig maker. In May 1850, James Chance, 11, was apprentice d t o R ober t Ballance to learn the art of farming. By the 1850 Census Robert was 36), a mechanic, and lived in the Mat t a m uskeet District between Henry Cahoon and Wilson Gibbs. His wif e El iz ab eth Ballance was 32 and his children were listed as James W . Bal lan c e (age 12) and David Benjamin Ballance (age 10). Also list ed i n hi s ho usehold is William D. ("Bill Barney") Ballance, his bro ther , ag e 25 an d a laborer. In August 1866, Thomas(unknown), 13, and Hannah (unknown), 11, we r e a p prenticed to Robert Ballance to learn the art of farming and h ou se k ee ping, respectively. In Hyde's 1870 Census, Robert was 57, a farmer, and lived in Lake L a n d ing. His wife "Betsey" (Elizabeth) was 52. Also living in the ho us eh ol d is son William P(ell) Ballance, age 17, and Hezekiah, 18, J oh n W. , 1 0, and Minnie, 14, all students attending school (it is no t c ertai n i f Hezekiah and Minnie were children of Robert). Robert appeared in the 1880 Census as 66 and a farmer in Lake Lan d i n g District. Also listed are his wife Elizabeth, 62, and his 40 y e a r ol d son David Benjamin, a Store Keeper and his wife Martha E. ( Br od ie) , 28, Robert G., 4 year old grand son of Robert, Anna L. , a on e ye ar o ld grand-daughter of Robert, and Linnie Truman, a 2 0 year ol d wit h n o relationship given to the head of the household. Robert Ballance died in July 1883. His 1884 estate papers mention e d h i s heirs as J. H./W. Ballance; David Benjamin Ballance of Lewis to n, B er tie County, North Carolina; Dr. William Pell Ballance of Ne w B ern , Nor th Carolina; and Robert's widow Elizabeth of Hyde. Robert and Elizabeth Ballance are buried in Amity church Cemetery , ( H y de Co.), Lot 84, along with their son David Benjamin Ballanc e an d h i s first wife, Martha, and Robert's brother William D.
