Note: The following is likely the ancestry of Nancy Eliza Barnes but n o t y e t "proved": John Barnes (ca1700-1773) & Katherine Barnes of Bertie Co, NC begat Henry (1742-1813) & Jemima Sholar (1750-ca1850) of Bertie begat Reuben (1770-1855) & Nancy Martin (1780-1850). Both born Bertie b u t d i ed in Trigg Co, KY. They were married in Bertie 16 Jul 180 2 . The y b egat Thomas who married Susan Duvalls Nancy is believed to have been the 12-yr old daughter of Thomas a n d S u san of the Tyrrell Co., NC 1850 census. __________________________________________________________________ _ _ _ _ ________ On the 1860 "Nancey" (28) is with her husband, Samuel, and infan t s o n , Robert Thomas Hawkins, in Williamston, Martin Co. None of the three have been found in 1870 On the 1880 census she was in Craven Co., NC. On 15 June of that y e a r , the census reported "Eliza" Hawkins, Head of Household, Widow , a g e 3 7 and son Robert, 21, Fisherman, living on South Front St. i n N e w Bern . On that day "Eliza was sick with fever". Also living in the same house but as a separate head of household ( t h e refore probably no kin) was Bettie Willet or Millet, Widow, ag e 6 3 a n d William Denis, age 21, Fisherman. "Elizabeth" Hawkins, age 35", died on Christmas day, 1880 of "Dro p s y " and was buried on Dec. 26th in Cedar Grove Cem. (Ref; "Intern me n t t o Cedar Grove Cemetary, New Bern, NC 1866-1909, vol 1 and 2 , Mic ro fil m m.441 40001, ref. # 990, located in Craven Co., NC libr ary). Her grave is unmarked but research has narrowed it's location to ei t h e r grave #1168 or #1257 ------------------------------------------------------------------ - - - - ------------------------------------------------- There is obvious inconsistency in Nancy Elizabeth's age; 28 in 18 6 0 , 3 7 on the 1880 census, and 35 when she died When and why did (Nancy) Eliza(beth) come to New Bern?
