Notes
a. Note:   The Strickland's present several unresolved mysteries. Until recen t l y , there were only five sources of information relating directl y o r i nd irectly to George;
  1. The earliest is the Carteret Co., NC Bond of June 1862 to marr y E m e line Gaskill (his second wife)
 2. The 1870 Carteret Co, NC Census (Morehead City); George STRICK L I N G is listed as a Fisherman
 3. The 1880 Craven Co, NC Census wherein Emeline Strickland, his se c o n d wife, is listed as a "widow having been married 13-years"
 4. The 1900 Craven Co Census of his son Charles (by the second wi f e ) w ho stated "his father was born in South Carolina" (further pro o f f or S C on 1920 census of youngest child, Sarah Strickand "Willis "
 5. The Craven County NC delayed birth certificate of his daughte r M a r y (Mollie) Strickland (Meekins), also from the second marriage , st at in g her father was born in 1841 (an error; by the 1870 Censu s of C art ere t Co., NC, George was born ca. 1831).
  I have looked extensively for George in the 1850 and 1860 Census I n d e x of Strickland families (including different spellings I can th i n k of ) up and down the east coast and have never found him on th e 18 5 0 or 1 860 census. I expected to find him as a head of househol d som ew here i n 1860 for by that time he is known to have had thre e childr e n wit h a fourth on the way in 1862.
  I have also sought to determine what became of three of his four ch i l d ren by the first marriage (Nancy, Richard, and Samuel), as list e d i n t he 1870 Carteret Census, hoping to find a marriage or deat h re cor d (af ter 1913) that would "prove" who their mother was. It i s pre sume d th e mother of those children was also the mother of Sara h an d tha t the m other died during or shortly after Sarah's birth i n Marc h 1862 , leadin g to his remarriage in June 1862. I have neve r found a ny info rmation c oncerning these children.
  All of the above was written a couple of years ago.
  Recent findings has revealed one added source : (Ref NC Troops, 1 s t R e giment, NC Artillery)
  "G.W. Strickland, Private, born in Richmond Co. NC, (conflicts wi t h S C ) was a fisherman prior to enlistment in Carteret Co, NC Au g 1 , 186 1 , age 30. Enlistment was for the duration of the war. Capt ure d at F t . Macon Apr 26, 1862 and parolled until exchanged in Au g 1862 . Neve r r eported after exchanged."
  Having learned the above clarifies age but throws a wrinkle in wh e r e h e was really born.
  The goal is not so much to determine earlier history of Georg e a s i t i s to determine his first wife; was it Sarah Green ? By t he 1 92 0 & 19 30 census, daughter Sarah stated "father born in SC an d mot he r in NC . The issue of Sarah Green was a Willis Family debate ---on e o f the Gra ndchildren even said "a dark secret" causing me t o wonde r if , regardle ss of name, she was a mulatto
  One thing is certain; George was in Carteret or nearby in Aug 186 1 w h e n he joined the CSA. However, he/nor family can be found on th e 18 6 0 C arteret (taken 14 months earlier). One would be lead to pre sum e h e wa s indeed already in Carteret but not counted or that he w as i n tr ansi t to Carteret during the period of the census (June 186 0).
  One final note, although listed as a resident of Morehead Cit y o n t h e 1870 Census, The death cert of his last known child, Charl es H ., s ho ws Charles as born in Beaufort in 1872. If so, that is li kel y wher e Ge orge died about 1875 although he could have died in Ne w Be rn sinc e tha t is where wife Emeline and her step-daughter Sara h an d childre n Charl es & Mary (aka Molly) are listed on the 1880 ce nsus.
  Emeline lived until 1904. Her obituary is in The New Bern, NC Dai l y J o urnal, Tuesday 29 June, 1904. Age in obit states age 68. Thi s co nfli ct s with census data of 1870-1900, indicating birth ca. 184 3. Sh e i s bur ied in Cedar Grove Cemetary, New Bern, NC. There is n o tombs tone .
