Note: Born about 1760 and served with his father in Capt. John Harveys Co m p a ny of Militia during The American Revolution. Joseph was left on e- th ir d of his fathers landholdings in his fathers Will of 1781 an d wi th i n a month of settlemement of his fathers estate in July 1782 , Jos ep h p osted a marriage Bond in Perquimans county NC to marry Ha nnah M cMu llen , " a single woman" also of Perquimans. Within 5-years of marriage Hannah died and Joseph took a second w i f e , Rosanna Ming of adjoining Chowan Co. Thomas Ming (possibly he r b ro th er) cosigned their marriage bond on 10 December, 1787. On October 2, 1788 Joseph paid his brother Spencer 30 Pounds fo r h i s s hare (70 acres) of their fathers estate. He was appointed overseer of the road between Indian Creek and th e Y e o pim River in January 1790, having authority to call out neighb or s f o r assistance. Joseph, with John Pettijohn, purchased 200 acres in Chowan Co . f o r 4 0 Pounds on 22 March 1790 from Thomas Ming, Sr. On the first US Census (taken in 1790) Joseph's household in Perqui m a n s Co consisted of one male over 16 (self), 3 males under 16, an d t w o f emales (one no doubt his wife, Rosanna). Whether the other f ema l e wa s a daughter cannot be said. Joseph continue to increase his landholdings throughout the 1790' s p u r chasing a total of 240 acres in three different transactions , incl ud in g 100 acres adjoining his brother Leaven's property. The 1800 Tax List showed Joseph in the Harvey's Neck district of Pe r q u imans with 280 acres, one white poll and two black polls. His ho us eh ol d, according to the census that year, one male between 26-4 5 (se lf) , o ne male 16-26, one male 10-16, nd onw male under 10. I t also s howe d on e female 26-45 (Rosanna). Joseph also owned land in Chowan Co. and on 30 Nov 1801 sold 48 a c r e s for 240 Pounds On 3 May 1802 Joseph and Rosanna witnessed the transfer of land bel o n g ing to his deceased brother, Leaven to Leavens sons William, Zac ha ri ah , and Meddes. Despite the attention Dr. Isaiah Sanborn, Joseph was dead by the f i r s t of April, 1808; he was buried in a coffin purchased for 2 Poun d s , 1 0 Shillings. His widow, Rosanna signed an admistration bon d o n 9 m ay 1 808. Rosanna inventoried the estate three days earlier , rea vealin g Jos eph's personal property to be greater than his fath er' s a quarte r cent ury earlier. From the estate, Rosanna and family, six in all, received provisi o n s t o feed them for a year and on 29 Dec 1808 Rosanna's Dower righ t s t o on e-third of his property was alloted. Nearly two-years wer e re quir ed t o settle the estate. On 1 Feb 1810, the land and slave s wer e divi ded a mong his four sons and on 29 April, the administrat ion ac count s were a udited showing a balance of 607 Pounds, 1 Shilli ng, an d 7 Pen ce and di vision was made.
