Note: Nathan was born between 1775-1794 (based on the 1820 Perquiman s C o . N C Census). Marriage and other data enables an estimate of ca . 17 84 . Be cause of the uncertainty of date it is unclear whether Na than' s m othe r was Hannah McMullen or Rosannah Ming. Given the condi tion s of m ortal ity related to childbirth it is likely, notwithstand ing N athan l ater r eferring to Rosannah as "Mother" in his will tha t Hanna h was pr obabl y his natural Mother but an individual Nathan n ever kne w. It i s als o a possibility that his brother, Nathanial, wa s a twi n althoug h I hav e estimated his birth as ca. 1786. In the division of his fathers estate on 1 Feb. 1810 Nathan was all o t e d considerable land. Two years later Nathan took a wife, Esthe r Wh it e . Their marriage Bond is dated 19 April 1812. In August 1814 Nathan undertook administration of the estates o f h i s y oung (half ?) brothers, Thomas and Charles (their mother presumed as Ros a n n ah). In the division of their estates Nathan and his brother Nat ha ni e l each received 91 1/2 acres on 18 January 1816. The Census of 1820-1830 clearly documents Nathans family. After the Nat Turner slave insurrection in nearby Southampton Cou n t y , VA, Perquimans County took special measures to prepare a defen s e a ga inst similar uprisings and Nathan was appointed to the Patro l l comm itt ee for Yeopim district on 16 Sept. 1831. Nathan lived until the spring of 1832, writing his Will on Marc h 8 t h a nd dying by April 12th. He left his homeplace to his son Ben jam i n an d his farms near Bethel community to his daughters Rosannah , Ma ry , Jan e, and Sarah. His son Thomas was already deceased. He al so ma d e provis ion for the lifetime care of "his mother" Rosannah. B y Ma r 7 , 1838 whe n his land was further divided, only three of hi s six c hild ren were st ill living; Rosannah, Benjamin, and Jane. Various papers involved in the settlement of Nathans estate ref e r t o h is lands as The Manor Plantation, The McNider Place, and Th e O ld P lace . His slaves included Caroline, Charles, Isaac, Jane, Ju pite r, Da ve, J erey, Ben, Ann, Mourning, Jenny, Hannah, Thamer, Char lotte , Sara h, Bet ty, Miles, Anarchy, Mariah, Hager, Jim, Hester, Ph ilis , and Pen ny.
