Though Joel Erwin Croxton didn't think much of the soil conservation techniques proposed by the CCC, J. D. was a pioneer in conservation in Schuyler County. One CCC crew camped out in the front yard on the old home place, and built the dam in the gully across from the house. When the campers had extra food they gave it to JD and his family.

  FAMILY HISTORY -
 J. Dwight Croxton and Bertha E. Peck were both born in Huntsville township and still live there. Dwight was born in 1892 and Bertha in 1897.
They were married in October of 1916 and started farming on seventy rented acres, with four horses, a cow and a few pigs, calves and chickens. Now, in 1983, the fields are dotted with green machines and cattle, but no milk cows or chickens.
J.D.'s grandfather, Elijah Croxton, came to Huntsville township in the 1850's, raised his family of five sons and five daughters there, with the exception of a few years in Oregon, where J.D.'s father, Joel, was born. Liking Illinois better, they came back - by boat to the Isthmus of Panama (no canal) then across the Gulf to New Orleans and up the Mississippi. What a trip that must have been!
Bertha's grandfather, Jacob Shank, also came to Illinois in the 1850's, from Indiana. He was born in Virginia in 1824 and also tried living in Ohio for a time. Bertha's mother, Addie Shank, married Alfred Peck. All their children, five sons and two daughters, were born on the same place Addie was born. Jacob Shank died there in 1924, making him a little over 100 years old.
Joel Croxton married Josephine Byrns of Brown county. He was a teacher there and Josephine was one of his pupils. They came to Schuyler County to live and continued there all their lives. They were the parents of three daughters and three sons, Dwight being the youngest.
Dwight and Bertha were blessed with six sons and one daughter - Byron Keith (deceased), Wallace Russell, Harold Lee, Joel Jr., Robert Byrns, Billie Peck (deceased) and Joan Dee Long. There are now nineteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. In October of 1983 we celebrated our 67th wedding anniversary.
Elijah Croxton helped organize the Shiloh church in the 1860's and some of the Croxtons have attended there ever since. With a farm family on every 80 acres the church used to be filled, but no more, as time has brought many changes. The original building still stands and is in use every Sunday.
The Croxton's are of English ancestry and were potters by trade. There is a village in England called Croxton. Submitted by Bertha Croxton
