Notes
a. Note:   Other Information:
  - From Mel Doering, Mel.Doering@valpo.edu, Archivist, Valparaiso University, March 12, 2002
"According to our records [1911-1912 Students Credits Ledger, page 440], Julia Meyer of Arenzville, Ill., was enrolled in the Teachers Department of Valparaiso University for one 12-week term beginning Dec. 12, 1911, and for three to four weeks into the next term which took her approximately to the end of March, 1912. In the first term she studied U.S. History [grade-82], Civics [94], Geography [95], and Grammar [96], earning excellent grades. In the next term she took Arithmetic and Grammar for three weeks each, and Orthoepy -- correct pronunciation -- for four weeks (no grades are recorded). Awarding of teachers' certificates seems to have taken place year-round here in those days and no commencement ceremonies were involved, so we have no records of those presentations."
"It was not unusual for practicing teachers to take such so-called "review" courses at Valpo for short periods of time. Thousands from Indiana and surrounding states did so."
The official name of the school in 1912 was Valparaiso University. That name would have been on her certificate. It became official somewhere between 1905 and 1907, but for years afterward the school was still known by its previous name -- Northern Indiana Normal School -- or variations thereof. Lowell Thomas, who was graduated in 1911, always insisted it was University of Northern Indiana.
According to the appropriate catalog, tuition in 1911-12 was $18 per term or $60 for the entire year of 48 weeks if paid in advance, and room and board was $1.70 to $2.75 per week; board, tuition, and furnished room per term: $38.40, $45.00, $51.00.
