a. Note:   George O. Borneman, 66 of 414 Maple Row, Elkhart, Ind., a county office holder for more than 16 years and a retired hardware store owner, died this morning, Apr. 27, 1954, in General hospital.
 He suffered a stroke at his home Monday afternoon. He had been in failing health since the fall of 1950. At the time, he was elected as county treasurer. He resigned this position because of his health after only one month in office in February of 1951.
 He was succeeded by Charles Link, who complete's Borneman's term Jan. 1, 1955, and now is Republican candidate to the office.
 A lifelong resident of Elkhart, he was employed as a teller at the St. Joseph Valley bank, and by the New York Central railroad.
 In 1915, Borneman and his younger brother, the late Fred Borneman, opened the Electric Hardware store at 515 S. Main.
 The brothers operated the store for 21 years. Mr. Borneman's father, Herman Borneman, and two older brothers, Herman F., and the late Edward, owned Borneman and Sons Hardware store at the same time.
 Herman F. now is president of the Borneman and Sons store.
 Following the death of his brother Fred, George Borneman entered the real estate and insurance business for several years.
 Then, he became interested in Republican county politics. He was county commissioner for two terms from 1936-44, and was county clerk also for two terms from 1944-51.
 Twice, he led the county ticket in fall elections, with the largest vote margin over his opposition.
 He has been retired since resigning as county treasurer.
 Hw was a member of the First Presbyterian church, Masonic organizations, Elks lodge, and the old Atherton club. He had been an elder for several years at the church. He was a former president of the board of directors of the YWCA.
 Born in Elkhart, March 13, 1888, he was the son of Herman and Katherine (Wagner) Borneman.
 His marriage to the former Zella C. Howard took place on April 22, 1914.
 Besides the widow, survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Kathryn) Lansche, Elkhart; three sons, George H., La Grange Park, Ill; Pvt. John C. Borneman, Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., and William T., Elkhart: a brother, Herman F.; a sister, Mrs. Rose Schutes, also both of Elkhart, and eight grandchildren.
