  Ben Dexter Clapp
  WHITSETT - Mr. Ben Dexter Clapp , 87 years of age, of 6556 Foster Road, Whitsett, died Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at Clapp's Nursing Center in Pleasant Garden, N.C.
 Mr. Clapp was a Guilford County native, a retired employee of Newman Machine Company, Greensboro, and long time member of Mt. Hope United Church of Christ. Known for a quick wit and always speaking his mind, Mr. Clapp will also be remembered for his love of maintaining a large lawn and vegetable garden, most notably tomatoes.
 Mr. Clapp was a proud U.S. Naval Veteran of World War II, having served on a destroyer.
 Surviving Mr. Clapp are his wife, Laura Whitesell Clapp of the home; and three sons, A. Ronald Clapp and wife, Doris Johnson Clapp , of Julian, N.C., Gerry D. Clapp of Charlotte, N.C., and Bradley N. Clapp of Atlanta, Ga. He is also survived by a grandson, Christopher L. Clapp and wife, Leslie Robinson Clapp , and their son, Carson H. Clapp of Wilmington, N.C.
 Mr. Clapp was the last surviving child of the late Ernest and Carrie Gorrell Clapp . He was preceded in death by four brothers, Roy, Wilson, Otis, and Bill; and one sister, Cleo Clapp Bradsher.
 The funeral service will be conducted at Mt. Hope United Church of Christ on Friday, August 25, 2006 at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Dr. Walter Patten and the Rev. Dr. Lawrence Clapp . Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Church cemetery.
 The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 7 to 8:30 this evening, and at other times, the family will be at the residence.
