Note: s crew hand on the "Tai Yang" in 1951 after spending some considerable time in other world ports. He left his ship and reported to the Australian immigration Office requesting permission to remain in Australia on the 18th September 1951. He travelled to Canberra where he obtained work with Selmar Engineering. He met and married Mary Gladys Irene Watson on 1st. of October 1955. They moved to Cooma NSW. There he obtained work as a Powder Monkey & pipe layer on the building of the great Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme. They then returned to Canberra and lived at 31 Allambee Street Reid. It was the second marriage for Mary Gladys . The first to Russell Dorhauer ended in Divorce. Gunnar and Gladys had one child which was stillborn. Gladys had had two sons from her fisrt marriage. Russell Albert James Dorhauer and Anthony John Dorhauer, and another which was stillborn. In 1957 Gunnar was granted permanent residency to remain in Australia and was naturalised on 19th December 1957 Gunnar was cremated at "Norwood Crematorium" Canberra and his ashes were scattered by His stepson, Russell Albert James Dorhauer into lake Eucumbene (as per his last wishes), in the Snowy Mountains of NSW, his beloved fishing and camping area.
