CHAPTER IX
NINTH GENERATION
FREDERIC GEORGE9 BULL/BULLARD (George 8,Charles7,Archibald6, Isaac5, Isaac4, John3, Isaac2, Edward1) was born 31 May 1871 at Ann Arbor, Washtenaw Co., Michigan (Washt. co. V.R.). He was baptized 9 Jul 1871 at St. Thomas Apostle Church there. He was married in 1895 (1900 U.S. Census) probably in Chicago, IL. to Catherine McIntyre (see chart D). No Cook or Washtenaw county record exists for this event. Also, many churches were checked to no avail. He was a painter by trade.
At some point in his life, probably between 1892-1895, Frederic Bull became Frederic Bullard. There exists several documents that convince me that they are one and the same. First, there is his listing at his burial place, Mt. Carmel Cemetery, in Hillside, IL. It gives his last name as "BULL or BULLARD. Then there is his daughter Catherine's'? death record(Cook co. VR). It lists her father as Fred Bullard and his birthplace as Ann Harbor[sic], Mich. Also, there are the baptism records for that same daughter and his son, James. Both list the parents as Frederic Bull and Catherine McIntyre(Holy Family Church, Chgo). Another daughter's birth record (Marie), also lists Fred's birthplace as Ann Arbor (Cook co. VR). In addition, there is his father, George's obit from the Ann Arbor Daily News (2 Jan 1909). It has among his survivors, "Fred Bull of Chicago. Finally the US census (IL) for 1900 lists Fred Bullard's birth date as May 1871. There exists no record in Ann Arbor, church or state, for a Frederic Bullard, only Frederic Bull. Neither does a legal name change record exist in Cook nor Washtenaw counties.
I have a theory as to the reason for the name change. On 19 Sep 1892, George E. Bull was arrested for attempting to kill his son(the newspaper, the Ann Arbor Register, from 22 Sep 1892, doesn't say which one). "He shot at his son twice . . . and submitted his intentions to kill (him) . . . and it was all the officers could do to prevent another attack.? The very next day, Catherine Riley Bull died of dropsy. The last record of Fred in Ann Arbor is his listing in the city directory of 1892. He next surfaces in Chicago in 1897 in a child's birth record. He was married to a Chicagoan in 1895, so it is probable that he migrated between 1892-1895.
I doubt that this is all coincidental. I think that Fred was the victim of the attack and he fled to a new place with a new name. The reasons for the attack and how it involved Mrs. Bull are anyone's guesses.
Fred died 8 Jun 1909 in Chicago(Cook co. VR) and was buried 10 Jun. in a pauper's grave at Mt. Carmel, Hillside,IL..
