Arch.). He was a miller until he enlisted in the Mich. Militia in the Civil War. He served from 1861-1865 in several different units. He was discharged from each one though because of a severe case of hemorrhoids. He married Catherine Riley (see chart E) ca. 1861/2 (ibid.). No record of this exists in Ann Arbor town or church records. It is possible they were married in California as he lists his residence there in an 1860 land transaction in Ann Arbor. It just as possible that they were married in Detroit, Mich. because that is where he spent a good deal of time during his military service. In 1867 he bought the house at 30 Wall St.? and lived there for twenty-five years until his wife died. By 1880, he was in declining health and gave his occupation as a huckster (peddler). In 1892, George was sentenced to prison for assaulting his son (see chap. 9). He was quoted as saying "Things have come to a terrible pass when a man can't whallop his own jackass" (Ann Arbor Argus, 7 Oct 1892). He later lived in the Old Soldier's Home in Grand Rapids, Mich. until 1898 when he remarried to Sarah Joy Seymour Bump Maples on 31 Jan in Kalamazoo, Mich. (Kalamazoo Co. rec.). This record is an important one as it gives his parentage. It also lists his residence as Detroit. They lived together at 916 Wall St. until 1908 when he went back to the soldier's home. George E. Bull died on 1 Jan 1909 in Grand Rapids, Kent Co., Mich. (Mich. Dept. Pub. Health VR) his funeral mass was at the NorthSide Church of the Union denomination and was buried at Fairview Cemetery, Ann Arbor on 3 Jan. Children, all born at Ann Arbor: i. Charles, b.1861/2. ii. My grandfather`s (William Bullard) birth and death records both list his father as Fred Bullard from Michigan (his mother was Catherine McIntyre of Chicago). Nothing could be found there with that scant information. A search at the family cemetery in Hillside, IL, produced a burial for a Fred Bull or Bullard. This led to his death record (Fred Bull) which just gave his age and the state of birth. I started to locate records on his other children, and on some he was Bull, and others Bullard. I had no idea of the reason for this discrepancy, and neither did any of my older relatives. Then I got lucky. On one of the death records of his children, the place of his birth was given as Ann Harbor (sic), Michigan. This led to the birth record of Frederic George Bull on 31 May 1871. I then found other records on Fred, andhis father, George Edward Bull. I was able to trace the line back to the 1600`s in England (Edward Bull). All the while, each male had the name Bull. I had to be sure these two men were one and the same. There exist several documents that convince me of this. First and foremost there is his listing at his burial place. Then there is his daughter Catherine's' death record (the Ann Harbor one). Also, there are the baptism records for that same daughter and his son, James. Both list the parents as Frederic Bull and Catherine McIntyre. Another daughter's birth record also lists Fred's birthplace as Ann Arbor. In addition, there is his father George's obit from the Ann Arbor Daily News (2 Jan 1909). It has among his survivors, "Fred Bull of Chicago. Finally the 1900 Illinois census lists Fred Bullard's birth date as May 1871. At some point in his life, Frederic Bull became Frederic Bullard. The question was then, why? He did not do this legally in either Washtenaw County, Michigan, where hewas born, or in Cook County, Illinois, where he died. I have a theory as to the reason for the name change. On 19 Sep 1892, George E. Bull was arrested for attempting to kill Fred. "He shot at his son twice . . . and submitted his intentions to kill (him) and it was all the officers could do to prevent another attack.(Ann Arbor Register, 22 Sep 1892). The very next day, George`s wife, Catherine Riley Bull, died of dropsy. Later on that year, George was sentenced to one year in prison for assaulting his son. He was quoted as saying "Things have come to a terrible pass when a man can't whallop (sic) his own jackass" (Ann Arbor Argus, 7 Oct 1892).The last record of Fred in Ann Arbor is his listing in the city directory of 1892. He next surfaces in Chicago in 1897 in a child's birth record. He was married to a Chicagoan ca. 1895, so it is probable that he migrated between 1892-1895. I doubt that this is all coincidental. I think that since Fred was the victim of the attack, he fled to a new place with a new name. The reasons for the attack and how it involved Mrs. Bull`s death are anyone's guess. This, unfortunately, was not George Bull`s first brush with the law. In 1883, he was convicted of attacking his wife with a razor! The Ann Arbor Daily News printed the following about George Bull in his obituary: He was well known here, and highly respected.
