After serving in World War II, acted as a drug clerk at City Drug in Thomaston, Georgia; sold insurance products; worked for a time in the cotton mills; and began career with B. F. Goodrich Tire Corporation in the early 1950s. The career with Goodrich took him to stints as assistant store manager in Brimingham, Alabama in 1958; store manager in Selma, Alabama, in 1959; store manager in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1962; and store manager in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 1971.
In January 1972 suffered a major heart attack in Tuscaloosa. After recovery, he continued with B. F. Goodrich in a diminished role at Coker Tire Co. in Chattanooga. After a couple of years he officially retired from Goodrich but continued working as store manager at Coker Tire, from which he retired in the mid-1980s, but continued to help out parttime for several years thereafter.
Known affectionately as "Banddaddy" to his grandchildren, Al was "retired" for almost 20 years preceding his death, but remained busy with his involvement [deacon and otherwise] at South Seminole Baptist Church; his yard work for several of the "widder women" in East Ridge; his puttering around with small engine & truck repair, and building birdhouses and woodworking projects; and serving as a mentor and guiding light to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
