  THE EVENING TIMES Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland Saturday, October 16, 1943 Page 5, Col. 2 Frank J. Kirby Kitzmiller, Md., Oct. 16 - Frank J. Kirby, 50, was killed instantly yesterday morning when he was buried under a fall of rock while on his way to his position in the Wolf Den mine in Shallmar. Three of his fellow workers removed the rock. A son of the late William and Sarah Kirby, he was born in the Georges Creek section but lived most of his life in Kitzmiller. Surviving are his widow, the former Miss Patricia Denny, and two children, one two years. Six daughters and a son by his first marriage to the former Elsie Clem, who died twelve years ago, also survive. They are Mrs. Beryl Wilson, Mrs. Virginia Raye, Miss Shirley Kirby, and Miss Marjorie Kirby, Kitzmiller; Miss Louise Kirby, Washington; Mrs. Neil Sturgiss, Stockton, and Radio Mate Second Class Williard Kirby, Annapolis. Arrangements for the funeral will be completed when Mr. Kirby's son arrives from Annapolis. THE REPUBLICAN Oakland, Garrett County, Maryland Thursday, October 21, 1943 Page 1 Rock Fall Kills Kitzmiller Miner In Wolf Den Mine Frank J. Kirby Meets Instant Death While On Way To Work Frank J. Kirby, 50 year old miner, was killed instantly last Friday morning when he was buried under a fall of rock while on his way to his position in the Wolf Den Mine at Shallmar. Three of his fellow workers were able to remove the rock within a short time, but the elderly workman was dead when they reached him. His death was pronounced instant by Dr. Ralph Calandrella, who conducted and examination. Mr. Kirby, son of the late William and Sarah Kirby, was born in the Georges Creek section and lived most of his life in Kitzmiller. He is survived by his widow, the former Miss Patricia Denny, and two children, aged one and two years. Six daughters and a son by his first marriage to the former Elsie Clem, who died twelve years ago, also survive. They are Mrs. Beryl Wilson, Mrs. Virginia Raye, Miss Shirley Kirby and Miss Marjorie Kirby all of Kitzmiller; Miss Louise Kirby, Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Neil Sturgiss, Stockton, and Radio Mate Second Class Willard Kirby, Annapolis.
