 THE KEYSER STRIKE.
Jno. R. Kirby Explains His Position in the Matter.
  LONACONING, Md., June 28, 1900.
Mr. Editor — I saw in the Times where there had been a strike at the stone crusher, about half a mile below Keyser, also that a man by tile name of Kirby was the leader of the strike.
I want the people to understand that I was not the leader and there was no leader at all, but the largest majority was going to ask for more wages and decided to hold a meeting between six and seven o’clock on the morning of the 20th and the men all gathered there; and as the drivers all came on their horses the under floss came up and told all that wanted to work to come on and all who didn’t to go home, and at that all the drivers all jumped off their horses and then ordered some of the drillers to take their horses. The men were still standing there in a body. The question was then asked: “What are you going to do?” They said: “To go on with the meeting.”
The next question was to elect a chair man. A motion was made to elect John R. Kirby. I asked them to kindly get some one else, but they insisted on me and I acted for them. I then told them that the meeting was open for any new business.
Then they said they bad been working ll hours a day for $1.26-1/2. They wanted 10 hours a day and $1.25. Then the question was asked, all who was in favor of that to bold up their hand and they all held up their hands but three or four out of about 60 men and those three or four went on to work.
The chairman asked them what time they were going to give the boss to get an answer back; they said they would cease work at once, for they had asked the boss before and he would never see about it as long as they worked. I then instructed them to work that day, but they would not. Then they asked for a committee to wait on the boss. They appointed the chairman to wait upon him, and as I stated what we wanted he told me he would let me know that night. He said he bad wired to Mr. Baker, the president of that company, and he said he could not give the wages, and the majority of the men would not work for it. There were a few scabs started the next day. John R. Kirby.
