Note: Sent by email from Jana Church (Beckley newspaper? June 1950), also copy in my possession Headline: Hearing Awaited By Youth After Stepfather's Death Subhead: 17-Year old Is Accused of Shooting Man at Home A preliminary hearing has not yet been set for George Maxwell, 17, who is accused of killing his stepfather, George Shrewsbury, 57, early yesterday morning at their home near Odd. According to State Police who investigated the affair, young Maxwell apparently fired two shots from a 12-gauge shotgun at Shrewsbury while the elder man stood outside a window on the house. The boy and his mother walked from the home on Thomas Creek to Odd, where they reported the shooting to Deputy Sheriff Mason Farley. State Police said last night that the only motive for the crime given by the boy was that he was "afraid of his stepfather." "Apparently, there had been some trouble in the family before," the investigating officers said. The stepfather previously had an argument with another stepson. He had been forbidden by a court order from entering the house for 30 days, police revealed. Yesterday, the 30 days were up. When Shrewsbury came home about 6:15 yesterday morning, he couldn't get in the house, an investigation disclosed. After trying to door, Shrewsbury moved over to a window in the front room of the house and knocked on the pane. It was then that the Maxwell boy is thought to have fired the shots. According to an official at Calfee's Funeral Home, the older man was shot twice, once in the chest and once in the neck. Police said the mother and a younger brother were in the room at the time. Maxwell is now in the Raleigh County Jail awaiting a preliminary hearing. Funeral arrangements for Shrewsbury have not yet been completed. ************** George Shrewsbury's death certificate lists the informant as Witford Shrewsbury, and lists George's parents' names as George Shrewsbury & Hazel Lilly. The SSDI lists this person as the only "Witford" in the entire database: Name WITFORD SHREWSBURY Birth 06 Dec 1912 Death Dec 1981 Last Residence 37861 (Rutledge, Grainger, TN) Last Benefit (none specified) SSN 232-12-7243 Issued West Virginia or North Carolina In the 1910 Census for Summers County WV (Jumping Branch District) This family is listed: (all born in WV, all parents born in WV) Thomas Matison Lilly 53 m2 24 years Amanda Lilly 43 m1 24 years (11 children, 9 living) Hazel Lilly 18 m 0 years Jamie (or Jennie) Lilly 13 s Cyrus W. Lilly 10 s Dortha Lilly 8 s Gracie B (or P) Lilly 6 s Hettie Lilly 5 s George W. Shrewsbury 23 m 0 years If the George Shrewsbury listed here is mine, then it looks as if Hazel Lilly was his wife, not his mother. Could Witford Shrewsbury be a son of George & Hazel, and could he have put the names of his own parents on George Shrewsbury's death certificate by mistake? George Shrewsbury's sister was Anna Atkinson. Her death certificate lists her parents' names as Wash Lilly & Armenda Lilly. Should this have been Wash "Shrewsbury"? Were Wash and Armenda married? ******* More info: Groom name: George W Shrewsbury Groom age: Groom estimated birth year: Groom birth date: Groom birth place: Bride name: Hazel Lilly Bride age: Bride estimated birth year: Bride birth date: Bride birth place: Event type: Marriage Marriage date: 1909 Marriage place: Summers, West Virginia, United States Father of groom name: Mother of groom name: Father of bride name: Mother of bride name: Marital status: Groom previous wife name: Bride marital status: Bride previous husband name: Film number: 589347 Digital GS number: 4228418 Image number: 00058 Reference number: Source: County Records Collection: West Virginia Marriages 1853-1970 ___________________ From my email: Subject: [WVRALEIG] confusing obit for george washington shrewsbury Date: 3/7/2010 7:42:50 P.M.
