a. Note:   t of writing letters to Isabella Bishop, who saved many of the letters and who he later married. William was working in a store at Forrest Creek on the Mt Alexander goldfields in 1853. By 1854 he was working as a draper in Hobart after he visited his uncle, John Cleghorn, and he decided to stay in Hobart. He left Hobart in April 1856, travelling up to Sydney on the 'Lion', then travelling up to the Rocky River goldfield to establish a store with his brother. Later he opened a second store in partnership with Franklin Jackes, who had lived with William in Hobart. In 1858 he and Franklin Jackes open up a store in Armidale which they ran for about two years, until William took up a property 'Mt John', between Armidale and Uralla where he established on orchard. Later on he became mayor of Uralla and also moved to a property 'Mooraback', east of Armidale.
Note:   William was the first of his family to come to mainland Australia, although his uncle John was in Hobart at that time. William arrived in Melbourne on 3rd Jan 1853 from Liverpool on the 'Ben Nevis'. Much is known about William, due to his habi
